CheersCadbury ends tours at its Tasmania factory
April 15, 2008 - 9:55AM
After bringing pleasure to chocolate lovers for five decades, a Tasmanian institution has come to an end.
The Cadbury factory at Claremont, north of Hobart, has ceased its popular chocolate-making tours.
Now, visitors to the factory will have to satisfy themselves with a talk provided by guides in the visitor centre.
New health and safety regulations adopted by Cadbury globally meant the Tasmania tours could not continue, the company said in a statement today.
"To comply with increased health and safety standards, and ensure that the high quality of the Cadbury brand is maintained, visitors will no longer have access to the factory," the statement said.
Melbourne-based Cadbury spokeswoman Robyn Newman said the Claremont factory tour had allowed visitors in some instances to come into close contact with machinery.
She said visitors would still have the opportunity to buy chocolate at a discounted price from the visitor centre.
Ms Newman said the company was investigating ways to have a world-class facility at Claremont.
She said the now defunct tours had been running for about 50 years.
The company expects to make a decision about the future of the factory's tourism activities within 12 months.
"To provide a tour facility that meets good manufacturing practice will require significant investment," the statement said.
"Cadbury will continue to investigate ways to provide a safe, world-class visitor experience at Claremont, including working with third parties.

When we tried to book in for the tour, thinking it wouldn't be a problem we were told that it was booked up four weeks in advance, and that's for tours starting every half hour from 7am.
Sounds pretty popular.
Crazy to cancel it.
Cheers

yep i booked months in advance in 06 for jan 07.......megs would have killed me if we had missed it
best part was watching the kids stuff there pockets with chockies even though they were only allowed four....the lady gave up trying to police it
Went on that tour in 2004.
It was great, however I may have created a "stir".
Whilst walking around the factory and listening to the Guide, I happened to notice a male picking up chocolates from a conveyor belt without wearing gloves, like the others were.
I mentioned it to the guide who was rather shocked, spoke to his supervisor and there were some quick actions taking place after that.
I did make a mental note not to eat that type afterwards
Shame to see the tours stop, who is going to conduct "quality control" now

Gee will the Cascade Brewery tour be the next to go??
Turn the lights out is not wrong. This is the pic I took in Hobart CBD one Sunday morning last year - it is one of the main streets:
