Diana, I have never had much luck with the Bablefish translation sites. My kids often bring home primary school homework which for some reason they are made to do in another language (German). I usually give up and tell them to take the work back and tell the teacher we are living in Australia, not Germany!Quote:

To you Ian and I say this is with no disrespect, I do understand your reasons however this is one occasion where, for your child's betterment it is possibly time for you to bite your lip and say nothing to deride the learning of German (or any other language).

I agree to the learning of a second language although I think our kids school language is Japanese, at least German will get you by in several other countries in the area, Japanese to me is more learning a language for the sake of learning one.
Like most of the world I am not overly fond of the French but to me it is a more practicle language to learn. There are other examples that are at least a little more universal.
The only gripe I have, which I have taken up with the school is that there is more time allocated to "learning" the basics of Japanese than English (The response thus far has been but the learning of english also goes on during other lessons with corrections to spelling and grammer

Spanish is a very useful language, with it you can travel through most of the Americas and it makes understanding of Portugese and Italian much easier. The next best would be the same as Kevin, that of Mandarin.
