Whatever you have done Inc, it is faster now, only taking 10-15 seconds to load up a page, still not perfect but much better, but this is the only thread i have opened.

    Hi All,
It may be due to time of day (ie usage) but I certainly haven't had the problems indicated by Ron B.

    Best of luck Incisor.

    Best Wishes,

Oh great one, just to let you know,
must be ok up there but down here, it varies from night to night, even during the am sessions when i get on. Between fast to really slow to dial up speed slow. its even worst when alexander is online too.
I thought it was this rural telstra, sublet to aapt adsl connection that I am on.
But on general internet its fine.

my investigations lead me to several conclusions thus far.

    1) where i can afford to house the server may be having an effect to some extent. It is in pipe networks wharf street brisbane complex. pipe is connected directly to most of the major players and is free bandwidth on many isps but not all. this was one of the reasons i housed it there as it is very multi-homed. i believe some of the problems are due to the size of the connection between pipe networks and some of the isps, and that in peak hours those connections are becoming saturated and therefore affect the speeds people are getting out of aulro. there are too many varying reports from different isps at the same time of night for it simply to be a direct result of the server alone imho. moving to another bandwidth supplier may create more problems than it fixes if they are not as multi-homed as pipe, and very few would be i would think, but it is not an area i am overly conversant on.

    2) there are obvious signs that the server is getting i/o bound due to the number of database lookups from page queries which is why i have been turning things on and off to try to find out what is having the biggest impact. it didn't dawn on me till today that i could isolate registered but non subscribing users from the search feature. i set this up after the penny dropped to see what affect it would have. the results have been quite substantial it appears so far but i need to look longer and deeper to get a factual result.

    3) the best solution to the problem is a second server to handle the database i/o. a new server would allow me to split the web server from the database server. a suitable new server would have to be in the late thousands to early tens of thousands of dollars to be capable of the transaction and i/o levels needed to handle the current growth rates for a couple of years IF there isnt growth beyond current levels. using the current web server just for the web serving side would be sufficient for a few years on current growth rates. the problem being, it ups my hosting charges to around $400 a month and subs are never going to cover that in a blue fit. my advertising deal i have in the wings and my current advertising schedule doesn't come near that either i believe.

or i find a dedicated server service on a server farm in the US that falls into the necessary budget, and i havent stumbled on that one yet either...

    4) on current funding levels the place simply can not go to the next level unless
    a) i can find a suitable high-end server at a great second hand price
    b) subscription levels go thru the roof
    c) i have a lotto win :P
    d) someone with the funds and a business plan buys me out

so for now i can only rationalise what i have at my disposal.

there in lies my dilemma ......

depends whether you took the auto renew option or not.

i am about to put the subs options on the davesitshop site so people that credit cards or prefer direct deposit can take out subs more easily.

EDIT: Ignore me - missed your longer post.

Can you gets stats from the db to see what the main cause of the IO hits are? (i.e. Is is something that could be solved with indexing differently, putting indexes into RAM, more RAM, etc.?)

I have a mate who is a SQL DBA who I could probably persuade to take a look if you were happy to give him access to the box.

I haven’t read all of the thread, and don’t know the history.

but my 10C worth would be
Limit the file size on up load to 100Kb
move the moderators forum from its default address ( security)
and give me back my new post search.. please

search is back on, it was off long enough for me to see what i needed to see.

pretties including sigs and avatars for non subscribers are off to see if that has an affect.
