Could be worthwhile if it makes any difference, but I somehow doubt if the number of the forums makes much difference to the load unless they actually increase the traffic - and if they are not being used, they obviously don't increase the traffic.

I tend to agree, the number of overall posts will be much the same and certainly the number of users won't decrease significantly unless the site becomes unattractive because its too hard to use .

i could do that in a heartbeat .... but i try to keep my mouth mostly shut these days

the number of forums is not an issue, it is the amount of data being pushed out and the number of database lookups that are done. it is getting i/o bound as requests get queued waiting to be executed.

a single page of data could require many databases look ups, so the more pages per minute displayed the more the requested get put in the queue, the longer the queue gets the longer you wait.

searches are definetly the big speed killer...

At this time of the morning it is hanging about the same time as in the evening, so that sort of eliminates the local rural exchange.

i am sure you will work it out.

hmmmm. the system is running way below peak loads at the moment... so if you are experiencing big delays i doubt it is all the servers fault.

just went back a few pages and read your big reply hub thingy
I am illiterate on the ways these things work, so i guess it is all down to the source area and the traffic that comes in and out.
I am visualising a large interestion with cars trying to get through as teh analogy.
For my area that may now explain the intermittent slowness, after all we only got adsl because of the hibis interest, so I guess telstra is not doing any further exchange updates around here.

In iraq we had a satellite uplink shared server, during the day( till 10pm) to ensurer bandwidth the IT guy shut down anything that restricted it, after 10pm when traffic was low, i could access photobucket and the like. I guess it is the same here.
still trying to understand all of it,

Dave, I suspect that many users are like me.

When I log on, I use the New Posts feature to get an index of new stuff.

I select a thread then, after reading the topic, I don't always use the back key to go back to the index of new posts, I often hit New Posts once more - especially if the last topic I read went over several pages of stuff I hadn't previously read..

Will that slow the system much?>
