I posted recently about a very problematic (but intermittent) rattle coming from sometimes one, occasionally two front doors on my Defender 110 CSW, 2005.
The vehicle - from which the driver's-side front door lock actually fell out into the street, on opening the door after taking it off-road, a week after I bought it new - is still under guarantee, but Landrover seem unable to do anything about the rattle problem. (I don't know how hard they've tried or what they've done, but I am unwilling to live with the problem.)
Actually, it's a kind of rattle plus vibration (no problem on tarmac, but problem on anything even slightly rough). When I lean back and put my ear to the door pillar, the rattling is very obvious, but I suppose that being amplified, presumably, inside the pillar, it would be (obvious).
I don't think it's wiring or cable on metal: not that sort of sound. Definitely something heavier. Surely it can't be the door against the door-frame? Whatever it is, it's a really major irritant.
Anyone had this with their Defender, and how was it solved? (Yeah, I know, buy a Landcruiser instead. But surely the Brits -I am one - could have sorted out this sort of thing by now.)
I had a similar problem on my TD5. The first thing I found was the external handles were loose. To get to the screws holding these on you have to take the back of the door off. When I did this I also found that there is a 6mm nut that holds the door mechanism inside the door frame. This was also loose.
After doing the drivers door I decided to check the other doors. Yes you've guessed it, four doors later and no rattles. This was about two years ago. The drivers door has just started to rattle again, so it's going to be back out with the tools at the weekend
Just finnished putting the door back together and yes the nut was loose again. This time I put a penny washer and spring washer on it. Next time I shall put a nyloc on it but I don't have any at the mo and seeing as it is saturday arvo the chances of getting any in Gladstone are pretty slim.
Anyway, I have attached a piccy of the offending nut (arrowed) for those players out there who may have a similar problem.
ihave an 06 defender and am on my third set of door cards. The locating pins on the back are very dodgie. One set where wrecked by landrover mechanics when they fixed the window winders. Sorry be carefull taking them off thier about a grand to replace acording to southside land rover
There is nothing difficult about taking of the door cards. However as previously stated care is required.
I have two broken plastic 'spikes' on my drivers door (out of about 8-10). They are standard type fittings and shouldn't be too hard to replace. I think they sell them in places like autobarn etc. I haven't bothered to replace the two broken on my door as the card is still held in by the rest and the inner handle which screws through the card aswell.
It is more likely to break these fittings when replacing the card as they need to be lined up carefully. When they are in the right place the door liner should just pop in.
Patience and resisting the urge to do gorilla blows is all that's needed.
