    Diff Breathers, DIY how?

So I know all I need is a length of tube from the diff up as high as possible.

What I was wondering is how I attach said tube to the diff?
The diff breather has a sort of swivel cap over the vent, do I just cut/grind it off then push the tube over or is there more to it than that?

It's a banjo fitting - 5/16 bsp I think. You undo the banjo (hollow) bolt and can either use a new banjo fitting, or visit pirtek for some push lock stuff. You just screw the elbow fitting into the hole and then push the end of the pipe (same plastic stuff as LR use - also from pirtek ) into the receptacle and it locks and seals.

I thought breathers were already fitted. They were on my '86 RR, my Disco, and my P38A.

Are they legitimate? I see them on ebay, but the seller makes them sound like a scam, like the 'fuel savers' or the 'electronic turbos'.

Do they actually work? Are they useful? I'll have to see if they are fitted to mine... I've never noticed them before.

Ok here is a cheap and easy way to make you breather higher

Go to Kamart, Bunning and get some irrgation pipe ($10 for about 10m, ). same size as the breahter that are already on the car. And get conectors that will conect it. Look at the back of the engine and you find the gear box one and find the ones for the front and rear diff. Then just conect the new pipe you have bought from Kmart / bunnings with the connectors/ And take them up the side of the snorkle.

See easy to do and no need to touch the diffs or gearbox direct. And will cost no more than about $30

That'sa what I did too for the rear diff coz the std. breather tube only goes up as high as the chassis. You might find you need to heat the tube ends a little to get the joiner piece on. I figured the std. breathers for front diff and g/box etc were high enough up on the firewall for me.
But I noticed when I had the locker installed in the back they also replaced the whole breather line from the rear diff right up to the top of the firewall. Strange.

We are doing the same thing to the county now,the breathers kept getting blocked with crap and oil kept leaking out of the drive flange caps.
So we are getting bigger conections on the diff and running some hose up in to the cab and putting fuel filters on the ends!
The current 4wd action dvd has a diy diff breather install.

I' think you'll find this is actually 1/8 BSP.

The sizing of BSP threads have no correlation to the diameter of the thread, but more with the inside diameter of the pipe they fit.

When I fitted remote breathers to my 2a, I had never seen the OE kits, so I bodged it up.
I first removed both breathers from the axles, then pried and pulled the rivet-shaped cap out and lifted off the floating shroud. I found the bore clogged with mud and dried grease, and the ball bearing heavily pitted, so it sort of justified the mod.
Around the outside of the brass fitting, down against the nut-drive, I filed a groove around the circumference so that the 1/2" hose I pushed over the top had something to clamp to (with the obvious aid of a hose clamp). I then ran the hose (a braided petrol-resistant variety) up to the bulkhead behind the pedals. The end result certainly looks bulky but oddly not really out of place. And it works...
Later on, I fitted the gearbox, transfer case and overdrive with remote breathers, too. This time, though, I used that 3/16" clear plastic fuel line, and ran it up to the same place. Eventually, I'd like to make a snorkle and plumb all these breather lines into it, too.
