I had a quick chat with him over the phone the other day - he sounded a little down in the dumps - as you would - if you have to lay face down for several days

..............but he was confident things were improving

    G'day Folks

Best wishes for a speedy and a full recovery Ron my father has had a similar thing done to his right eye, at the age of 83 and he's OK now.

Stevo68 it is an Eye Op. where the Retina (lens) of the eye detatches, it is re-attached with micro surgery.

    cheers

Best of luck Ron. I came bloody close to having this years ago when a tennis ball travelling at high speed hit me in the eye when I wasn't watching. Just scratched the retina thankfully but took many tests to determine. Hope you're back on your feet soon.

I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery, Ron. Sorry I missed this until now, not being interested in a winch, and it only just clicked that "How is Ron" referred to you.

The retina is the sensory layer of the eye at the back. The image impinges on it like it does on a film in a camera. It occasionally detaches from the back of the eye and has to be reattached.

This time (I had one in the other eye a few years ago) they sucked out the sruff inside the eye (the vitreous), stuck the retina back, refilled the eye with fluid then topped it up with gas. The gas bubble holds the retina in place until it has stuck. One has to lay on your belly to keep the gas bubble against the retina.

Last time they pulled out the other eye and stuck a cryogenic probe at the back of the eye. The worst bit is that you are awake while they do this (and the other method).

The gas dissipates over some weeks. But it means I can't go up the mountains or fly as the bubble can expand. I was supposed to go on a remembrance motorbike rally for my son this weekend and it is at Bathurst.

It also means I can't go to work as I work in the mountains.

Wish you a speedy recovery Ron. I can't imagine what eye syrgery while fully awake would be like.

Well thanks for that mate, bit better now having picked myself off the floor and had some fresh air, obviously you missed the "woos" part . Other than that, good to see you are on the path to recovery and bummer about the rally, hopefully someone will take some video for you,

    Regards
