    This is fair justice

While driving back from Melbourne I was flicking around radio stations to find some music when I came across some info about an Arizona Sheriff’s idea of fair justice.

Now call me a red neck or what ever but I think he’s on the right track.

As sheriff of the county, he is responsible for the operation of the county’s jail.

When a new larger jail was needed, he made the new jail by putting up some high barbed wire fences and giving the inmates tents to live in.

He has managed to get the cost of inmate’s meals down to 20c a serve, mainly because he charges the inmates for their own meals.

The inmates don’t get cigarettes and don’t have any exercise equipment supplied. His argument is why should the inmate build up the strength just so they can go out insult innocent people once they are released.

He introduced chain gangs for the male prisoners two years ago and has just introduced female chain gangs and when asked was this fair, he commented that there was no discrimination in his jails.

The prisoners complained that the temperature was 116F outside. His reply, and this is a gem. “Our troops in Iraq were living in tents in 130 degree heat and patrolling all day in full military gear and they had never committed a crime so shut your faces”

He took the TVs out of the prison say this was not a holiday camp so why treat these offenders like they were on holidays.

The problem was that apparently there is a US federal law that states inmates must have access to cable TV, so he gave them back their TVs but only supplies two channels, the Disney channel and the whether channel.

He said he gave them the whether channel so they would know how hot it is going to be the next day.

It went on but this is just some of the info I can remember and this IS fair justice.

Shame they couldn’t run gaols here the same way.

BTW, he has just been re-elected for the umpteenth time.

These are some of the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the "tent city jail" to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.

He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but "G" movies. He says:
"They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave."

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: "So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs."
He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2007), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed wire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheard chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.
"This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace," said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. "Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves."

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: "It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected as Sheriff in Maricopa County , Arizona

nope... reread it again again and again...

still cant see whats wrong with it?

i am big believer in this kind of treatment.... feed them 3 hot meals a day and give them a far better life than they would ever get outside jail... where they gonna want to live? .... exactly..

prison should be hell... and then they will think twice about returning..

    Thanks

    Steve

Ditto with Steve, re read it a few times...no qualms there. Ohhh poor little diddums commit crimes against society and then complain, screw em. I've watched some of the crime programs on cable where they go into some of these prisons....and it is exactly that, some of them are like resorts. Good to see the pandering bleeding hearts don't always get their way, wish there was more like this over here. Maybe taking away their liberties and making it bloody awful at the same time may make some rethink their ways,

    Regards

I remember hearing a new report that inmates in a jail in Tasmania were complaining about the qualtity of their lunches being lowered. The 'lower' lunch they described was still better than what I usually make myself!

    Good on the Sheriff

He definitely gets my vote! A shame there aren't more prisons like that.

From my understanding, if you go to prison here, or in the UK, the prisons pay the prisoners (Or rather WE pay THEM!)

And of course, if you're lucky enough to get put in a "mental" prison such as Broadmoor, YOU GET PAID A PENSION UNDER THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT!!!

So kill away, as long as you're INSANE you'll get better looked after!

    MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL!!!
