Nice comparison Slunnie, thanks.
Nice comparison Slunnie, thanks.
As the owner of both a 110 and D2a with ACE air bags etc I have some experience to fall back on. Comfort can be measured in many ways and it depends on what is important to you. The seating position in the defender is liked by some hated by others, it comes down to how big you are etc. The noise in the defender is enough to make most people deaf. If you are deaf then the noise may not matter but I can say that after a couple of hours on the highway you would get out of the defender with ringing in your years, the D2 and I suspect the D1 is heaps better in the noise department.
Off road give me the defender, for all the reasons already stated, taller tyres, clearance and the phsycological factors. Although when brand new it is not nice to put dents and scratches into anything but you get over it a lot faster with the defender.
The other great thing the defender has going for it is the cavernous load space. For two I would challenge even Emalda Marcos like women to run out of space to take all their accessories.
Go a D1, same suspension as Defender, more comfort.
This is a topic close to my heart at the moment. Looking at replacing the D1 with a D2 or a Def 110 .The misses wants a 110 as she likes them alot more than the D2 and thinks it will keep the 90 company in the garage . She loves driving the 90 but is just too small as a family car.
But as most of my defender driving has been in a 90 and not a 110 (owned 6, 90's and 1, 110 but the 110 was only for a couple of months and was a 200Tdi). I have to think away from the fact that the 110 drives totally differant from the 90 .As the 90 can be like riding a Kangeroo on dirt tracks or bumpy roads, although the camper trailer does clam it down a bit . This is manly due to the short wheel base. And also you can't move the front seats back too far because of the rear bulkhead, but not a mayor thing as my wife is a short ar*e anyway.
So the 110 is total differant from the 90 in many ways to drive and live with
Looking more and more like i am gong to get a 110 but the wife wants a red (rocco red) or dark Blue (Oslo Blue) coloured one and definatley not a white one![]()

If a Defender came in an auto, it will be pretty good in some offroad situations where auto is better than a manual....

MY EXPERIENCE: '97 Defender 300Tdi - 7 years, 90K km - all in north-east Arnhem Land.
'00 Discovery TD5 Manual (non-ACE) - 3 months 4K km - all in north-east Arnhem Land.
As Slunnie said
Speaking purely from my experience then the 110 wins hands down for capability for all the reasons given by others. Once you get to the comfort stakes then the D2 is almost universes rather than light years ahead.
Having driven both vehicles between Katherine & Nhulunbuy which has 650km of at times interesting dirt then them D2 is far better there. Holds the road better and does not float and wander like the 110. Better towing the camper trailer too and you arrive less tired from the effort.
Having said that
Mine was the opposite - didn't like driving the 110 hence the D2. If she wants one and you at least like it and don't mind it on road then go for it mate.
So Catch-22: as my eldest son (6' 4" ~100kg says "If were going offroad and there's a Defender around I choose that to ride in any day.".
Cheers.
