I tend to feel that the problem is not the Land rovers reliability, it can hold its own against the best of them, but more so the high visibility of the breakdowns that do occur, as the offending vehicle is usually placed on a tilt tray and often transported fairly long distances to the nearest Rover dealer for what can sometimes be very minor repairs.
A lack of Rover dealerships, plus a general fear shown by many "so called mechanics" in many smaller places, of the advanced technology involved (The Japanese are starting to catch up though on this much journalisticly scorned "Pommy electronic gadgetry") all adds up to high visibility and adds to the poor reliability myrh.
When I first bought my current TD5 Disco (my third disco) I was pretty dubious about its build quality and ability, and this doubt was generally fired up by motoring journos who had cut their teeth on Japanese products and knew nothing else, but since having owned it for almost 7 years and run it along side my mates Tojo's and Nissans as tow vehicles and general runabout for the last 180,000ks, I am so far in front in reliability, capability, and economy it doesnt bear talking about.
I also find that I have to shut my mouth so often when mates start bragging about some of the wonderful new features they have in their new toys, as they disbelieve me when I repetitively reiterate " my 2001 disco has that!"
    Regards
    Glen

There is a lot to be said for being "stuck in the 80"s".
I've had more problems with modern cars than old Landie's.
The Landies that have acted up always gave plenty of notice and I have still never been stranded by a mechanical fault. They always pick nice places to spit the dummy

Although the Rangie stopped with the Wife & kids one cold & stormy night b4 mobile phones in the middle of nowhere. It was a 20c bit of plastic in the Distributor. Funnily enough my Stage 1 did exactly that on a club trip and I impressed everyone by getting it going again with a zip tie.

I think alot of break downs could be prevented from performing regular maintenece on your vehicle, regardless of make.
Is it a matter of fact that since you own a Land Rover, you take more notice of them, so the break downs seem more prevelant than what they really are when compared to other makes. It was not since I bought my Disco that I realised how many were actually on the road.

Red was checked completely, new belts, Oils, shocks etc well 1 shock rubber destroyed itself going into Bungle Bungles that was after the Plenty H/way & Tanami Rd Quick repair with heater hose until we got to Halls Ck and dare I say the toyota dealer $6.50 later and all we came back with was a broken windscreen. Not even a flat tyre. As they say preparation.

The only time i have been broken down on a trip was ina 1985 hilux, broke the gearbox in the dengali state park (in SA) or whatever its called.

The closest call in the disco was the clutch failing a week after returning from the high country... was so happy it happended 10 feet from the drive way!

Don't know if it is the modern Landrover that has caused the problem. I think all the misconceptions seem to stem from early disco' and Rangies that had wiring by lucas the prince of darkness. If you lift up the bonnets of one of these vehicles the wiring is horrifying to look at. Also some people aren't prepared to put up with calling mark they often leave behind be they petrol or diesel.
