    County wagon converted to ute?

    G'day all

I'm looking for a county ute (3.9 isuzu) but as you know they are quite hard to come by in good condition, so i'm wondering if any one knows anything about taking the shell of a wagon and puting a ute cab on?

Also did they make any county utes with the 4bd1t? (that would be awesome)

    any infomation would be grate

    cheers
    Tristan

I have a county ute which was once a wagon. Its an easy conversion and all bolt on. I made a styleside using a tub from a Defender hardtop and a cab roof/cab upper back section from a Defender trayback. Use the door sill beams from a Series and you're good to go! It could be done in a couple of weekends if you were motivated but I galvanised the chassis while I was at it and it took over a year!

Its like playing with a big meccano set.

Registration wasnt an issue, just needed a mod plate for the reduction in seating capacity - from 9 to 3

If you want a tray back, use the cab roof, cab upper back and cab lower section (bolts to back of seatbox) from a Defender ute - it all bolts staight onto a county wagon chassis

There was an Isuzu county tray on Ebay a couple of months ago and Matt (Rovercare) has an Isuzu 120 but I dont know if either of them were factory.

    thanks for your reply

so realy if you do it yourself the only cost would be the bits of a defender cab and a few new nuts and bolts.

sounds like a good way to get a 4bd1t ute!

would you put ruber in between the aluminium the steel to stop rot?

It really is that easy - you probably wont even need to buy nuts and bolts.

Defender ute panels arent that cheap and take a bit of hunting down but they are out there. I paid $700 for the cab roof and upper rear section (with sliding windows), $750 for the rear tub, $30 for a Series 3 drop down tailgate and $20 for a pair of Series sill beams. Sold the wagon body and doors for about what the Defender bits cost so all was good. A strip of 1.5mm insertion rubber under the body mounts is good but it only sits on the steel chassis in a few places anyway.

Note - the 4bd1t is the turbo version - all the 110 county 3.9's were n/a but can be converted or swapped.
