    Thanks Slunnie.
That raises more questions tho because D3's have 17 or 18 inch wheels.
17's on the coil sprung 5 seater and 18's on the airbagged 7 seater !

I wonder what wheels John has and if they are a standed offset and so
    on.
Reason I ask is because I want an airbagged D3 and plan to change the
wheels and use good rubber, as well as the rest of the offroad bling.
    Tar again.

I may stand corrected, but you can get 17 or 18's on the TDV6 and the V6 with air suspension....you can only get 18's or 19's on the V8 due to the brake calipers. You can also get the same variants in the 5 seater as well with air suspension,

    Regards

There ya go. When I was a boy everybody was at 6's and 7's but now with inflation were up to 18's or 19's!

    Yeah, AFAIK Stevo is correct.

Both D2's that I've talked about here are TDV6's on air. One has factory 18" rims with 275/65-18 Cooper ST's and the other on BMW X5 17" rims with MTR's - not sure what size.
    Cheers

Stevo, what you said is quite correct but as I understand it, you have to specify which size you want.
LRA dont list a 16 inch for the D3, so I was wondering what John's 16's
    are etc.

I have had a very good run using BFG's on my D1, I like them, on and offroad.
I would like BFG muddies on the D3 but after reading the threads on the
D3 site, I'm not sure there is much to choose from in 17 and 18 inch.
    Cheers.

Sorry for the confusion Slunnie, I guess this must have been a typo that
    threw me off track ?

I only decided a week ago that I wanted a D3, so I have only just begun to check things out.
When I saw that pic of John's D3, I thought the tyres looked wide and fat
and would do the job on mine, so I had to enquire from someone who had been there done that !
    Cheers.

Doh! Sorry, that was my error.

Sorry, that should read 275/65-18. I've just edited the original post also.

That tyre is wide, and even for that size it looks to me to have quite a broad treadface. In Desert touring conditions etc, that thing hooks up and gets a lot of traction.

Thanks Slunnie, you've been very helpful, and it gives me something to work on.
I'll have to check now about what big sizes could be put on 17's without
    messing everything up.
Its desert trecking that I have planned and some long stretches, bush
    bashing.
I did read the other day about a bloke running 17 inch Super Swampers
on his D3 but I think that was a coil sprung model with a 40 mm lift.
I'll give it much thought because I only want one set of wheels ( 6 ).
    Cheers.

    Hi Olbod,
That D3 is mine, and thanks Slunnie for answering most of the questions.

You are correct, the tyres are 275.65x18 Cooper STs
The D3 in Melbourne that Slunnie mentioned with 17" BMW rims runs 265.70x17 MTRs

If you want only one set, then my Coopers are too big. They rub on the rear on full compression, but only just and it's not a problem. They also rub on full lock on the front but because they rub on the chassis that's not a problem either. However they come perilously close to the bottom of the front plastic bumper. Fitting a bull bar may remove this problem. On the left front you also have to re-route a wiring harness, which the tread of the tyre can catch.

As for the tyres themselves, I'm very happy with them. They've done 3 crossings of the Simpson now, towing a trailer, and only had one puncture which was a nail! They seem to be wearing well. I had Cooper STTs on my D2 and these are a quieter.
But I don't use them around town. The D3 is so quiet that it's a shame to make it even slightly noisier!

Another D3 in Melb. has Mickey Thompson ATZ in 275.65x18 and I think they don't have the rubbing problem of the Coopers, because they are not such a square wide tread.
If I were going for one set only (which I will eventually) I'd probably get General Grabbers in the original size. I have found that the larger size affects the fuel consumption on the road.

    Hope this helps,
