what is the tubed bar for on the RR

(this seams like a dome ? ) but on the front attached between the chassis of RR 1990 there is a tubed bar that has a y type piece on each end attached to the chassis what is its purpus and can it be removed or replaced with a after market one that will sit it up higher giving more clearence and less likely to be able to damage it.

It is a steering guard to protect the steering rods from being hit by various shrubbery, rocks etc.
You can take it right off as early cars did not have them, and they do not do much to protect the damper or rod anyway. Ask me how I know.
I have found I can easily drop the damper on a rock with it on.

You can buy aftermarket steel or alloy plate ones to replace the tubed one. Most Landrover specialists will have access to them.
