Looking at www.pradopoint.com the new diesel motors (D4D) are now starting to have problems with injectors. There's even someone who's got a holed piston, and pictures to prove it.
Toyota reliability, it seems, is a perception created by spending huge amounts of marketing dollars.

How's it going down there at Cape Crawford? I once had a 2002 Toyota Prado 3.0l TD Auto as a company car when I was the BDM for NEC for the NT.
The reason the earlier models came out with the 180 litre fuel tank was not for long range but to give the things some range. They are guzzler's of diesel and the fuel bill today in the Pilbara will just about send you broke. They are also about as solid as a beer can.
I took mine down the Odnadatta track towing a off road camper and they ride and handle OK on dirt roads but fill up with dust inside. I do not know if they have fixed it up in the later models but the front wheels throw up stones and you drive into them hitting the windscreen. Bit of a pain.
We have dozens of the new one's here at Woodside Pluto project on the Burrup and they seem a much better vehicle with a lot better fuel economy but they are still not my choice of a 4X4. (Each to their own).
It is a worry not having a LR Dealer north of Perth and as you know there is not one workshop in Karratha that you would take a LR into. The 1,600 k round trip to Broome would have been a bone shaker.

As fuel prices continue to rise and people trade gas-guzzling V8 and big six petrol fourbys seeking better economy, I predict a revival of interest in TD Landys. A Disco TD three or more years old in good nick is looking like a real bargain now.
Hey Mick. Mate the D1 or D2 V8 on LPG is a well kept secret. For eg my D2 manual 4.0 with single point - convertor - and lambda control for main valve and idle valve gives me 18.5-19 litres per 100k in and out to the city from the suburbs - highway at 90kph better again. That equates to about 8 litres/100k when comparing lpg to petrol prices...and compared to diesel, well better again.
I dont have backfire issues with the single point well set up, despite what some people think about this system. The torque comes in at lower revs than petrol and its actually smoother with only small power loss high in the revs.
I agree though that Landy TDs ought to be popular with their value in the D1 and D2.

Gas is good, but I get around 10l/100km from my 300tdi. I'd rather have diesel than gas. But I agree petrol V8 Landys are not as heavy on the gas as people assume,w when compared with Jap v8s and big sixes.
Mateeach to their own for Diesel v Petrol/LPG. I reckon both have advantages and disadvantages and it often comes down to personal preference.
When I run straight petrol I get 14.5-15.5 litres per 100k in and out to town and better on the highway. I think the manual helps a lot.
