I have lost one of those cam caps before and yes they do leak heaps of oil when missing. Mine was the rear.
Sounds like it was starting to run away and stopping the air supply was in order.

    Hope it's not to bad.

is this a good time for learner questions?

can the cam caps be forced out by pressure?
is this done by the injectors feeding the sump?

wont the leaking injectors be noticable as a lack of power?

that depends, if everything is healthy and your not running on becuase of excessive blowby atomising what youve got in the sump and blowing up into the rockers and into the air inlet via the crankcase ventilation then no

Indirectly yes, theres 3 seals on the injector 1 to keep the combustion pressure in the chamber and 2 to keep the fuel where the fuel needs to be in the head.. if they leak then eventually you wind up with diesel coming out of the fuel gallery into the oil via the rocker area of the head OR when you shut down the fuel leaks out into the combustion chamber and past the rings down into the sump.

nope not usually, what you will wind up with is either rough running if its leaking down into the cylinder because of unburnt fuel (If it doesnt run away) or a rising oil level. The rising oil level is usually the first clue.

On a cold and very far off the beaten track, there was a slight bump and the next moment the TD5 is revving and blowing smoke, not a good feeling as the motor had just been serviced the week before.

We opened the bonnet and found the black plastic "welsh plug" on the rocker cover had worked itself loose and spewed oil all over the motor. This effected the electronic accelarator. To cut a long story short we managed to get a tilt truck and got the Defender to St George. The mechanic said he has no idea so as I write this the Defender is on the back of another truck hopefully getting to Brisbane tommorrow.

I have always wanted a Defender and was looking to buy one. I have a major conflict happening, the head says run a mile but the heart keeps tugging.
Maybe the shrinking of my mates wallet after this weekend will put the whole business into perspective.

Get a pre TD5 in good nick or a new Tata one.....skip the time bomb completely...Defenders don't change much just their motor selection ....a.lot.
