Killing tree stumps ...best way ?

Drawing on the great wealth of knowledge on all things in this forum .... ( again)

I have just cut down about 10 Chilean willows ( also known as Pencil Willows ). Each was about 30 ft high and 2 ft across the base.
Now I want to kill off the stumps and stop them sprouting again ( after 3 days they're already sending out new shoots )
What's the best way to do this ?
I have some concentrated glyphosate (RoundUp ) in the garage - I was thinking of drilling some holes in the stump and pouring that in. Would that work ?
I'd rather avoid anything too lethal because I've planted new fruit trees a couple of metres away..
Eventually I'll probably get them ground out.

The new shoots so soon would be why it is a declared weed of national significance
Pencil willow, Chilean willow (Salix humboldtiana (syn. S. chilensis)) (Nox)

I would have painted the cut surface of the stump straight after cutting the tree down. It won't be as effective now but you could try drilling a bunch of holes deep into the stump and filling them with the Round Up you have.

I chainsaw a noughts and crosses grid into the stump and then fill with concentrated glypo or, Tordon if it is a particlarly nasty weed. You may have to repeat this process a few times. I also would paint the newly sprouted leaves. You may have trouble getting hold of some Tordon, but if you know a farmer or tree lopper, they may give you some.

    cheers

Cheapest - not necessarily most eco conscious - is to drive the chainsaw bar into the stump as vertically as possible and as far too.
Then pour sump oil into the cut and maybe smear around the surface.
If done neatly it does'nt pollute.
    I guarantee it works..

    Hi,
You will need to cut the stump again 2-3cm off the top will do it. Cut all the new shoots at the same time no matter how small they are, and paint/wipe/sponge - not spray - the newly exposed wood with 1 part round up to 1 part water. Only do this if there will be no rain for 24 hrs or you can protect the stump from rain.

Painting will stop any spray drift affecting your new trees.

You need to recut as the old cut will already have been sealed up by the tree, so it is too late to just paint round up on now.

Drilling a cut tree has limited success, it is usually used to kill a tree while it is standing (helps reduce soil erosion) The idea being that the tree continues to take up the poison over a period of time, a cut stump is no longer growing.

Do not worry about round up staying in the ground it does not work that way.

I'm amazed that I have found a post where I can answer a question, normally I just get to ask them.

I now use "Tree and Blackberry Killer" since 5T40 (2,45T) was taken off the market. Pretty effective. You mix it with distillate and paint it on after slashing the tree/green stump with an axe in a number of places. Might need to do it twice. Any mix left over, I drill a hole in the stump and pour it in.

No my old man told me when he was over to drive a small piece of copper pipe into the stump. Works well, water and copper gives off trace amounts of arsenic which kills the tree stump. At least I think that's what he said. Either way it's worked well for me.

Your spot on other than the round up, Glysophate only acts on the plant taking up water through foulage, it doesnt work to stop it from taking up through the roots, you would need to use something like Garlon which has about a month residule and use it the same way as above.

It works on weakening the cell wall as it is a stron herbacide, make sure you are careful about where it ends up, e.g. dont get it on your boots or for several months you will have foot prints everywhere.

The old blackberry and gumtree killer was great and it was a mix of Glysophate, Garlon and a binding agent to make sure the plant can draw it in.

I take it that you work in a horticultural field Black Betty ?
