We go caving quite a bit and have a certain setup for the gear we pack. Pretty much always the heavy stuff gets stacked behind the cargo barrier and then the soft stuff (clothes bags etc) gets put in front of it. The tool box usually goes under the seat but I put it there for scale. We pack it so most of it stays below the level of the back seat except for the pillows. That will be OK for 99% of accidents which aren't rollovers!
For general running around it is handy to be able to reach behind the seat for something without having to stop the car. When we go bush it is easier to grab a pillow etc that way too. Of course none of this helps in an accident when we take out the cargo barrier to put bigger things in! Ha Ha.
