oil light sounds like low oil pressure what engine? 300tdi?
could be bottom end and/or main bearings
So today i took a 98 defender table top for a good drive. everything works well, only two real things of concern,
1. the oil light came on coasting down a hill and at low revs, oil level is fine, i suspect a service is due
2. seemed to be a bit of play in the transfer? when going from 1st-reverse could hear a little movement then engaged??
have put a deposit on it but any help would be great!

the oil pressure light at low RPM when warm is a giveaway for one of 3 things
1. shot pump
2. shot relief valve spring
3. shot main bearings....
If its had a hard life it will be the bearings but thats not stupidly expensive to rectify especially if its been well serviced and not revved to buggery you might even get away with just replacing the bearings and no machining (expect sub $2k to rebearing, grind the crankshaft and re-ring the pistons if you do a heap of the prep work)
clunks in the drive line are going to be par for the course, if its the output shaft it can get exxy as that means a new box but if its a combination of wear in the axles, diff, tcase, gearbox ouput, suspension then dont panic, it'll go for years yet.

300tdi done 193000k getting the belts done asap, talked them down to $95000
$95000, they saw you coming....
perchance you ment $9500?
not a bad buy esp if just going the next grade of engine oil sort the oil light for a while...

I saw a 110 Defender Tray sitting in a caryard today and wandered in for a tyrekick.
Looked at the slip in the window, a 1999 300Tdi Manual with 238K on it.

$22500.00
You've done well!
Yeah - that's a good price for a late 90s Defender. Hope you can get it sorted for a reasonable price.
I would get a pressure gauge put on it first, before you panic. I had one that did EXACTLY that after a pressure wash. The oil pressure switch was faulty!
Further to that, if the pressure switch is leaking, then it is most likely the problem, but MAKE certain that it is tested with a master gauge and verified OK before you buy. $9500 is a great price, but not if an engine rebuild is in order
