That rear door is, as you say, a bodge up. It was originally a drop down tailgate and a lift up section hinged with curved hinges on the inside of the roof rear panel lower edge. I seem to remember that the later liftup doors had props that pivoted on these fittings and went into sockets near where the bolts go. The earlier ones like mine had the setup Dave described.
(Except for station wagons the side hinged soors were virtually unheard of in Australia on Series 2/2a)
