Thread: Skinny Tyres Vs Fat Tyres

205R16 is the factory tyre option. Not many options in this size though.

225/75R16 is pretty common. I have them on my Disco1.

235/70R16 but I find this size is not common in LT construction.

235/85R16 Anywhere and everywhere but getting a bit tall for a Disco1.

205/16 is the recomended size on my D1. Had several sets and although they don't look "tough" they have done the job admirably over the years. I'm with Black betty and go for "pounds per square inch" over racing slicks but I have to say the choice is getting less and less as more of the wider tyres are becoming standard fitment.

I prefer the look of a thinner tyre also. I did not use too however.

When I went to replace my 33's the other day I couldn't find anything less then 12.5 however I was after 9.5's I think they are. But the shops I called couldn't help .

I'm not sure about which is better etc... But for what I do I can get away with either easily.

Maxxis big horn yes, maybe bf goodrich and/or cooper...... but what else?

im a fan of skinny tyres to, as far as why are they not so popular, well thats the age old question of popular not being better..... vhs vs beta,

same as why are 15 inch rim tyres cheeper than 16, because they sell more, but i would rather run a 16.

my offroad tyre of choice would be super swamper q78, tall and narrow

wide tyres suck more fuel and require a wider rim with more offset so more wear and tear on the front end, they require more hp to drive through sandy or muddy conditions, as for floating on mudd so you dont cut as deep, hahahaha bull**** you need a bloody big tyre on a very light truck to do that.

at the end of the day if the contact patch were the same, tall and narrow will perform better than shorter and narrow.

again, this is a choice and compromise decision.
my delema was i wanted agressive but not expensive, so i had minimal CHOICE, i didnt want a really wide tyre, so along came COMPROMISE.
a 255 85 16 on a defer is the best all round size but as stated there only 3 brands with that size. so i went for wider than was needed but i got a tyre in the right price range and in the agressive style i wanted.

and dont be scared to try tyres that arnt ''popular''
