    I will not be upgrading to a D3 for all the reasons mentioned here. Did think about a D2 but I'll stick with my trusty auto D1 V8, basic electronics and quite reliable after 130k. And it sounds great with that V8 burble. Maybe drop a 4.6 in it one day.

    I have a great D2 but it is just too small. I would love to get into a D3 as there are a few of them getting around the outback here without any dramas, problem is they are so expensive for a young family it makes it hard to justify. I would by a defender tomorrow but I have front rowers shoulders and dont even go close to fitting behind the wheel. I love my landy and we have 3 in the family (D1, D2, 03RR) but if I were to get out of the D2 now I would buy a TD GXL 100 series cruiser. - thanks for the thread. cheers JP

    I just sold my 2005 D3 TDV6 SE, it was a fantastic car and never let me down once. I had some early suspension compressor issues (which didn't lower the car or leave me stranded - just a warning light on the dash) which affected 2005 models and some of the early 2006 models but these were totally solved under warranty and I never had any more issues than those I got in the first few weeks of ownership. Since LR changed the compressor manufacturer (CAT in the US I believe now make them) I've not heard of anyone having suspension problems with the air suspension D3

    Would I get another one..absolutely yes, and as soon as I need a daily driver again I'll be getting one. Probably in 2009 and probably with the larger 3.0 TDV6 that's rumored to be coming out.

    The ONLY thing that would / does make me hesitate is the crap dealer network here in Australia, but particularly the attitude of the 2 Perth based dealers, which isn't the best experience I've ever had.

    I can still maintain the P38A - I'm not sure I could maintain a D3. I couldn't afford to pay for the maintenance as I am retiring in a few months.

    the attitude of the stealers in Brisvegas since Blue Ribbon Motors opted out a few years ago is what would turn me off somewhat also...dealers can make or break a new or near new car experience. Personally if I were looking for a D3 I would wait until the bigger TD came out then buy a 2-3 year old 2.7 TD for a bargain and largely forget about stealers.

    It amazes me how many members on a Land Rover Forum can bag a new model from LR. There seems to be lot of support for new Toyota mosels over the D3.
    Many who say they do not like appear not to have experienced a D3 for themselves. Most of the poor reliability stories seem to be second hand at least.
    There is reason why the D3 has won so many awards all over the world, it is a well designed vehicle extremely capable in a wide variety of uses.
    You cannot compare an $80,000 new model with a five year old D2, there are places I would not take the D3 not because it is not capable but because I don't want to seroiusly damage such an exepensive vehicle. I have taken it rock hopping at Menai and some fairly serious off-roading ( have scars to prove it) but there is a limit.
    The D3 is excellent value when compared to its own competition especially the LC200 which at $90 does not offer what the D3 does.
    All new vehicles have complex electronics at least for the engine management and the LC200 has had reliablity issues with the V8TD already.

    Too early for many to consider getting yet to replace an older vehicle, it would be too expensive and the non dealer knowledge for repairs is not yet up to the task, but in time I think many more will move up.

    Why have some said RRS rather than D3? Same vehicle slight differences ans less space.

    i mentioned RRS in my post as would get the tdv8,also dont need the 7 seats or the room,can see your point though.

    i was also told by a lr salesman that lr mak a lot more money out of rrs as they are cheaper to make than the d3.(this was before the tdv8 was out)

    i really think lr should be highly comended for producing a vehicle that is now around 4 yrs old & still leads the world in its class by a country mile,there is nothing that comes close.

    it also appears to be extremely reliable

    its just that complex vehicles,no matter what brand are not for everyone,particularly if you want to diy all repairs &servicing.

    lr's dealer network is also poor,which doesnt do sales of their products any

    favours
