My wife scrapbooks, and that's a really good way to preserve memories. I lack the talent for it myself.
Of late I've started looking at different ways of preserving in our memories the great trips we've done. Looking back over the trips, I've been able to watch not only how my old girl (93 Defender) has evolved, but more importantly how the kids have grown up. The pics from when I first acquired the old girl are when my youngest was only a few months old.
Now days she's about to turn five. Now that might not seem that long, but take a look at: http://4wdlinks.com.au/gallery/cewilson and you will see what I mean.
So what I've started doing is a few things. I've been getting hold of some various photo frames that take around 15 or so pics, and making themes. The one I have done so far is themed around 'snow'. So I have various photos of our trips that involves snow, also including a couple of my son getting on the school bus outside of Canberra when we lived there with the car covered in snow!
On top of this, I've realised that the program 'Nero Vision' that I have on the computer enables me to turn all of my pictures into slideshows with music, that I can then burn onto DVD and play back. Now to me this is great. It saves me taking friends and family into my room to look at the computer to see the photos. I now stick on the DVD when they come over, they listen to some great music (note - my taste in music) and they see the photos from the trips.
This usually ends up in some great discussions about where we have been, and at the end of the day it's educating a lot of people about what a great country we have (and our great vehicle)
So what other ideas have people been doing to preserve their memories of trips - other than these forums of course - which we all love!
Cheers

Be carefull mate when you burn your photos. Not all DVD's are created equal. Usually more expensive ones are made in better factories.. but not alwaysThere are some good on-line storage mechanisms that might be worth investigation.
I applaud you for thinking about it.

What I am working on is to copy all the important pictures onto a DVD, or preferably CD*. Then, and this is the important part, make multiple copies and give them to friends and relatives in the hope that at least some of them will keep them safe.
Important trips etc are also in hard copy. The important thing is that anything you really value should be multiple copies, in different places.
* CDs seem to be more reliable than DVDs, although they hold less. Technical obsolescence is the biggest problem, and this means keeping a watch that your medium is not going to disappear, and copying everything when needed. Also, do not be suckered into storing anything in a format that depends on one particular lot of software to read it - use widely accepted formats.

I'd love to do the same to dads 8mm stuff from the 60s. We've put it to vhs but the tapes are near nackered.
Most of the manufacturers specify far longer archival lives for CD's than for DVD's. I'm not sure why, but a lower density media should always be more forgiving.
As NM has said the real issue is obsolescence. It's a big big problem. I love it when people do up time capsules with media in them. They really need to supply a player as well... At the rate technology is changing it's difficult to see how it's going to pan out. Most people haven't even noticed the problem and just loose their photos when ever their HDD crashes.![]()

All of my photos are stored on an external hard drive, and the DVD's are more for us or friends/family to watch now and again.
I've also sent copies to my mum etc in case something ever goes wrong (eg - fire).
The other things that I do is to put all the photos onto 4wd links, and I do the trip reports for here and Overlander.
So hopefully if something really bad goes wrong, I can still salvage enough to matter.
Cheers
