Join the Rural Fire Brigade and become either an Air Base Operator or Air Observer like me and you get lots of up close looks

Hi Weeds, that would be me.

We arrived in Brisbane from Perth last Mon the 18th for start of contract this Mon 25th.

I was over for the week, arrived back home today (23rd). Thurs and Fri was our training day for us and all QFRS crew involved in air ops. Training was at Ripley Valley fire station, approx 5 Mile SE of Amberley.

Once again we are based at Archerfield and on standbye from 0800 to 1800, 7 days p/wk until mid Nov, where we return to Perth.

We dont operate the "Elvis" type! we use AS350 B3 Squirrels, operating as a pair. These can each drop up to 1100 litres of water at a time.

Once again you are more than welcome to come out for a visit, I'll be back over Fri 29th and touring back and forth with 2 wks on 2 off.

For those that want to visit PM me and I'll send contact number.

    Regards,

    Greg

Sorry for threadjacking but, this is my work helicopter, a Mi26, and it can only drop up to 9000 litres of water at a time..that is a 20' container under it here

when it is kitted out with it's fire-fighting bucket. It will also carry internally a 5000l load of fire-retardant with which it will dose each bucket.

When it isn't carrying water it can re-position up to 80 personnel at a time, or move bulldozers or trucks to where they are needed quickly. A very versatile piece of kit.

Max load on a Mi26 is 20tonne at sea level at 10c.

I have been working these on contract here in Afghanistan for the past 2.5 yrs. Max loads we have worked here at altitude have been 18tonnes of ammunition in one hit, at 2-3000m. Mi26 will work up to 6500m for which they have a pressurised cabin.

There are many more photos of it on my thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-ch...rtunities.html

Took a whole series of shots like this one afternoon in 2006. The choppers were filling up at Champion Lakes to fight fires in the hills in Kelmscott:

Must be a land rover thing. Spent last summer as a DEC fire spotter pilot over here in WA. May go do a bit more for DEC after Xmas this yr when i get sick of cooking and being smashed about out here in the back blocks.
