Thanks again to all those listed above. Not only did you fill me in on your personal experiance but gave me some names of good brand campers to research and draw systems to think about....

I have worked out that either way, it's gonna cost a bomb.......but probably worth every cent. And why else did I buy a Landy!!!

    Cheers

I'd rent and try one before committing myself to buying. You might not like the layout of the trailer even though you love the camping.

We did that one when looking for a new car. We hired the model we thought we liked. A day with it convinced us to not buy one!

We did that too. We rented a few before deciding on the Cape York Trailer. I'm very happy with it, and it'll easily take anything I can dish out to it, and it'll do it for 25 years or more! I'm thinking about being an agent down here for them actually...
I will mention that the J***o ones we hired were absolutely the low end of the durability and strength scale, not to mention poor build quality and light duty fixings I'm glad we had the chance to check out a few before we took the plunge.
Our Galvanised full body Type3 trailer including kitchen annexe walls and 1.5t suspension upgrade was $19,873 delivered to Melbourne from Cairns.

The answer depends on what you intend to do and how many of you will be aboard the truck. There is no right answer that suits everyone.

I have towed a caravan up the centre though Alice Springs, Katherine and then across to Derby and all towns south to Esperance and back across to Melbourne. Took 4 months and had a great time.

We have carried a 12x9 tent in the back for the last 4 years and have been places the caravan would not even dream about. Slept on the ground on a self inflating matress each time and had a ball. 6 trips lasting between 2 and 8 weeks each. Cape York, Kurumba, Flinders Ranges, Kimberleys, Tasmania and a whole lot more.

Our knees are failing these days and the ground bed does not suit us now so we are changing to a 96 Kimberley Kamper which we are setting up to suit us. We will see lots again, sleep off the ground and set up camp more easily. The trailer will go where we go and my wife is practicing her trailer backing skills.

Stay in motels and see 10% of the country and pay big money for guided trips. Take a tent and go where you like without a fixed schedule if you can all fit into the truck. Take a good trailer and go just about anywhere in some comfort.

The trailer will use more fuel but the freedom over motels will make it all worthwhile. Motels do not exist in the best places or the owners want to be paid well for going to the effort of providing them. Caravan parks take tents as well as caravans and cost less than motels. Tents cost less than caravans and trailers.

Buy a tent, take a short trip, see how you like it and go, go, go.

Dont put it off to tomorrow, it may never come. I kept putting things off to next year and had a mild stroke. I never put off anything these days.

    regards

I would contact Ted at CYT on (07) 40355000 and ask, as he has some dealers/ distributors I believe in NSW, and one of them MAY hire you one?

I'll also add something I should've mentioned in my previous post, The model we bought I consider to be the 'Defender' of camper trailers. It aint real pretty but I want functionality, strength , versatility and utmost reliability for arduous conditions, Which I feel I have got with this one. (It'll very likely outlast my poor old RRC, which is going to have to do all the lugging for a few more years yet!)

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and having travelled up north in my single days, I'd say there are plenty of out of the way places where you can camp for free (or a nominal National Park fee).

So do you tow, or pay for accom?

With a family of 5, I thought about getting a camper trailer, and being able to stay in free spots. However the cost of the trailer, the added costs of towing and the limitations of being unable to take the really narrow & remote excursions got me thinking about an instant tent.

Either an Oztent or a Blackwolf Turbo. It goes up in a minute, weighs around 20kg and is a lot cheaper than a van. I wouldn't take a regular tent, as 20min added to packing and then unpacking each day really compounds your delays and becomes tiresome over an extended period.

Having the vehicle set up with water tanks, a fridge slide and a swing down table on the back door, still gives you the convenience of the instant kitchen offered by a van. Then once every 5 days you get an onsite van and have showers, cook several days meals in advance and freeze them, and get your washing done.

Just my thoughts - restricted by my budget.
