we moved from high wycombe 2 1/2 years ago, we found traffic ok compared with uk but the road system is not well designed so seems to take forever to get anywere, especally with so many traffic lights that are not sync and no right turns everywere.

we looked at bringing my partners dog, (unfirtunatly he passed on before we came) and i think the rules are in your favour for quarentine as uk is free of rabies, would have to double check it, saying that i feel for any dog that has to travel air frieght, i see many flying back to usa and they all look so scared its upsetting, but the end result should be worth while.

talking of dogs this country is hugely restricted on were you can take them very few good off leash parks and not allowed full stop in royal national parks which is a huge shame.
worse still not allowed in teh pub (due to food rules), surely whole point of having a dog is to wlak them to the pub
going camping with dogs though (state forests) is great and they have good fun, redback will know more than us as he takes his two everywere he can.

prices can be high on some things and property is staggnet at teh mo but coming from uk you will proably find it pretty reasonable with the exchange rate.
areas to live depend on what you want, but some good some bad. just like anywere else.

i bought lots of books and watched plenty of reality shows before coming then took the truth some were in the middle that will give you a pretty god insight intio what you letting your self into.

plenty of other english, scots welsh irsih and whole heap of other nationalites in sydney, plus a few aussies still left, you will find most are friendly and welcoming so you will have no worries finding help or a drinking buddy.

keep asking questions some one will help you out

I won't pretend to be absolute on this but I have a feeling if your going or coming from the U.K with a canine their is very little holding time. My friends who just moved over there only were without their dog for a couple of days.

When I was down that way they told me that people comute from as far north as Gosford (nice area) and from as far south as Woolongong. That is a long way I reckon.

    jon,
coming from driffield i know just what your used too and concur with what others have said but life is pretty good allround.
if your looking at working in the cbd try to avoid driving in unless you have too as traffic is gridlocked most days. i used to drive but then moved out west and have found the train to be fine with only the occasional delays.
housing you can go from budget to exxy depending on where you choose to settle, probably best to rent for the first few months and have a look around.
dogs, i think there is a passport you can get for your dog that covers all the vacinations so quarantine this end is not so long.
the best part is no matter where you are there is only a couple of hours for some excellent bush camps and adventures with great weather .
    cheers

I used to live in Leeds and worked in Derby. Swapping the (now demolished) Tinsley cooling towers and Meadowhall for the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge was one of my better decisions.

I'm not going to write any more about Sydney as it's pretty much been covered in all the above but I'd advise giving it a go here if you'e got the chance.

My philosphy was that I'd rather give it a try and have a rubbish time than stay in Leeds and never find out

    Guys,
Many thanks for all the replys, I really appreciate it. Sounds encouraging.

Obviously there are a lot more questions to ask and consider, not least the impact of existing commitments and family - Need to discuss those this weekend.

As for the Landy... Are there many LR shops like here in the UK, i.e. Paddocks, craddocks type places - where do people get all there bits from?

Also, more for interest than directly relavant to the thread, but do you have (around Sydney) Land Rover outdoor shows (eg Billing) like we have here or are they more generalised to 4x4 shows?

One thing I did wonder, those people that moved out from the UK, had you ever been to Australia before you moved out, or did you go out blind (so to speak)?

Sydney would be my least favourite of the capital cities in Australia. Only slightly worse than Brisbane.

There that should upset a few people
