They miss the rain. My rain coat which I bought 6-1/2 years when I started this job hasn't been out of my briefcase since it was put in there.

If you are at all unsure, and you own a house in the UK, you could rent it out and move here for a trial period of, say, 3 years.

I guess problems may arise if you still have aging family back in the UK. One of the chaps from here (Disco Pom) recently had to move back because of ill in-laws.

Google "A Place Down Under" - if you can source the TV series from your local library it would be good. I don't know if you've seen it but it follows a number of British families who moved here in recent years. See also the forum at British Expatriate Community : British Expat Community

Regrettably, most of the LR parts suppliers here really haven't got their act together that well for on-line ordering etc. But there are a quite a few around, e.g. British Four Wheel Drive (advertiser on this forum), Davis Performance Landys, Graeme Cooper, KarCraft, Rovacraft, Four Wheel Drives, British Off Road, etc. I don't know if the big supplier of LR parts, British Motor Imports, sells to the public or is just a wholesaler.

The LROC in Sydney run an annual event called LR Expo (Google it) - LR Australia attend this. The LROC in Victoria also run a 4WD event. There are some 4WD, Caravanning, and Camping Expos held around the country but LR don't participate at all. LR sales in this country are so low that smaller accessories are hard to find for them. There's nothing available for us P38A owners. :(

Everything is aimed at the big two or three - Toyota, Nissan, and, maybe, Mitsubishi. I think Toyota sell more Prados in a month than LR sell total in a year.

I hope (and am sure) that this is only one element of your research.

It's really hard for someone to see Sydney through your eyes.

I've lived in Sydney for almost 40yrs. I came here from NSW country town after completing school, for a job & university.

The CBD doesn't hold any fascination for me (although I love the harbour).

I suspect, due to your brief description, that you would be located in the CBD for work. Therefore, you would need to decide whether you wanted to commute "serious" distances to work every day, or if you lived closer to the CBD and escaped on w/es. I would suggest the latter. Then, of course, there are the intermediate positions. (P38aRover may well provide some counter to this, as he chose to do the opposite).

While they are reconfiguring the CBD with some great high-rise apartments, the general residential areas in inner Sydney are, largely, older style with limited parking options. But many of them have great community spirit, great restaurants/cafes, markets etc.

Sydney is surrounded , and encloses, some wonderful national parks and access to them, particularly on weekends, is soooo easy.

While we hate poms, they are so all-pervasive, that we now tolerate them. It will be easier for you once you learn to speak 'stralian.

The distance message is worth heeding. When we moved to the UK people thought we were mad with the distances we would drive. We followed hadrians wall from one end to the other as a detour once.:angel:

Jon, you could always get a job in the mines. Some of the places are several hundred kilometres from anything. Others - like where I am - are a reasonable town of 3500 people... several hundred kilometres from anything major.

You could then fly home to poverty rock on your 5 to 6 weeks holidays per year, drive the Landy in places where there is no bitumen, no Landy dealers and lots of people who believe Toyota's are faultless - even after they've broken down several times:o . Why limit yourself to a big city?

Oh That is easy to answer.........we get them from.....Paddocks, Craddocks and PA Blanchford's:D.......but we do have a few suppliers around......only thing bad about buying from Mother England is you people certainly know how to charge postage....I sent a PNG Police (Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary) cap badge and two shoulder flashes to a friend in the Suffolk Police.......cost me $1.60, he sent the same to me, only Royal Parks and Gardens Police cost him 8 pound something nearly $20 our money:o....certainly a big mark up, but Yes we do have Landy Parts suppliers here........probably have more now that Tata has taken over

Thanks for the replies. I guess the choice of area to live will be dependant on the job's base... Perhaps CBD from what you are saying.

A friend of mine has just moved out and is renting a flat in Manly. Does anyone know how long that journey (Manly - CBD) would take in a morning & evening?

I agree about renting somewhere for a few months until we find our feet and explore the area. Apart from Manly what other "nice areas" are on the northern shore? I believe someone said the northern shore was a fairly nice area.

Seems the internet is also good for looking at houses for sale... assuming you know what area to look at!

Not discounted a job in mining but I think due to Mrs Yorkshire_Jon and the pooch, we will need to be somewhere close to civilisation. We are not city dwellers by any standard, at least not UK cities! But a nice suberb Im sure would be nice. The 110 would certainly get a lot of weekend use exploring...

Having said all that about a house in the suburbs, the other thought (and I dont know if this is possible due to distance) is to have a house with a bit of land so that Mrs Yorkshire_Jon could keep a horse (I love the Landy's, she loves horses!!). I guess anything under 1hr drive commute would be acceptable.

Any ideas on nice house areas to google??
