Manly would be only about half an hour from the CBD by ferry, don't know about driving. Sydney is getting big enough that it is probably getting hard, although still possible, but expensive (not by London standards though!) to find somewhere you can keep a horse within an hour's commute.

I remember travelling by train or double decker through Sydney's inner suburbs and commonly seeing a horse, probably a trotter, tethered to the clothes hoist in the miniscule back yards of terrace houses.Quote:

Forget Sydney , to many people trying to live in a small space , ok if your a sardine or want to spend all day getting to and from work , the place is crap now. Used to be a great city ------ about 20 years ago !!.
Would consider any place else to settle .
Looking at the horse situation..... I'd guess a minimum of 3-5 acres would be needed? I am not a horse person so I can't say but Ive been around a place called Silverdale a few times lately and Camden, Theresa Park etc... And you can get some land with a "modest" house on it pretty cheaply around there and lots of places with a few acres and a house to rent also. The area is not the best in some ways but I'd live there for sure.
All over north shore is nice in its own way. I don't think you could go to wrong anywhere there. Biggest issue is if driving to work the traffic is always.... The worst in Sydney just about. And it is rather expensive to rent or maybe that's just because I didn't want to pay all my money to a landlord?
I'd suggest up my way too but it is a bit over an hour to the CBD. However my neighbour is renting 5 acres and a house for about 300p.w. which I think is pretty good.
Anyway, hope you find what your after... I doubt you'd regret moving here and if you did it's a pretty quick trip back!

I live in Manly and drive to the CBD each day, if you leave around 7am, it takes about 30-35 mins, in the evening, around 40mins...

I'm with Baz and others who have a view about Sydney...it's the pits...but some of us have to do it and put up with going to the bloody opera house to see some crappy concert by some foreign la de da orchestra or catch a leaky ferry to Manly on the stinking harbour or drive an oily land rover two flamin' hours to be in some god-forsaken-snake-infested-gum-tree-filled wilderness area with just a tent to sleep in just because we are made to...I could go on :pQuote:

One of the reasons I live in the western suburbs is that I live where I can catch faster and more comfortable interurban trains to the city - I'm not limited to suburban trains. There is no additional cost to travel by interurban train. Having said that I no longer work in the city but I did for many years. Train travel to the city (60km each way) is under an hour from my station and costs $48 (GBP22) for 7 days of unlimited trips. That is, one can use the ticket as often as one likes in that 7 day period without incurring extra charges.
It's not worth driving at that rate.
Rail travel is quite cheap here (in comparison to the UK) despite what the local media might say or imply.
Where we live, it's a short drive (10 minutes) for my wife to go horse riding although she no longer owns a horse) and 10 minutes in the other direction for me to get to the local national park.
Admittedly, we are 70km from the beach but that doesn't worry me as I'm not a fisherman, surfer, diver, nor a beach-goer.
However, the price of a house out here is often less than half what you'd pay on the northern beaches or inner suburbs - and much, much less than you'd pay in the Eastern Suburbs. You could buy a much larger new or near new house here for the same price as a smaller and much older house in those areas.
I'd recommend you come out and rent for a while to get a feel for the city and the suburbs.
