P.S. it doesn`t leak any oil ![/quote]
I'd go out and check if it has oil...don't be too overconfident with these things!!
Ray,
G`day, I recently bought a "95" Disco 3.9ltr manual. I have to say i`m very impressed and wonder why i havn`t bought one earlier. My last vehicle was a holden powered V8 Landcruiser fully engineered, while it was a great 4wd it can`t compare comfort wise to the disco. I bought the disco dirt cheap and it needs a little work, but for the price i accept that. It has done 260k`s but is as straight as a die (never been off road-till i got it). I know it needs a good service plus new shocks and maybe rubbers. But thats about it. Apart from that it still goes really well except a clunk when you accelerate and back off, & accelerate again in any gear. It sounds like a worn uni but all uni joints are tight. The tailshafts feel tight as well and theres no vibration in the gear box or transfer case. If anyone has any rough ideas or similar problem can you advise me where to look & what to look at (please tell me it wouldn`t be the box`s) . Also i`ve heard all the horror stories about disco`s being un-reliable and i can`t get them out of the back of my mind so can someone please put my mind at ease. Me and the missus plan on going round Australia in it next year (after a full service & everything of course). Any help would be appreciated thank you
Mark

Ray,
Welcome Mark,
The rear axle is attached to the chassis by an A frame. The ball joint at the "pointy" end will wear and result in a clunking noise very much like that:
This is worth reading:
''A'' frame ball joint
As for the unreliabilty of Discos...that, I fear, is an urban myth propagated by jealous Nissan and Toyota owners and best ignored by Land Rover owners of all types.![]()

a clunk.....mmmmmm have you checked your axles, could be wear in the diff i suppose does it whine?..
does sound like drive line slack though
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
Wisdom......no wisdom from here..............but enjoy and welcome to the "family",

providing the rear axle and has the fine splined diff in it then my money for the clunk is either the aframe or the output shaft of the gearbox...
From memory you should have the drilled gear in the tcase so that puts it firmly as the aframe.
lets check that... park it up and jack up a rear wheel, chock the front put it in nuetral on the tcase let go the handbrake and crawl under...
grab the prop shaft and turn it at least half a turn till the wheel starts turning then stop it by grabbing the handbrake drum it should make a little clunk and the wheel should rock a little but not more than say 2-3 inches of movement at the tread.
next up the first part of the check is to put both the tcase and the main transmission back in gear and then rock the wheel listen for clunking at the diff and the tcase. if you get noise at the tcase its usualy going to be the output shaft of the gearbox. (you will get some noise as the lash is taken up) and you should now get between 3-4 inches of movement at the tread.
Finally to check the aframe joint drop it all back down on the ground and solidly chock the back wheels then lock up the hand brake. Get 4 or 5 mates and try to rock the vehicle over the chocks if you hear a clunking now ITs your aframe joint or a combination of the other bushes.
If you suspect tcase noise pull the inspection plate off the back of the tcase and eyeball the output gear and splines
IF its the aframe joint given the K's on the vehicle Id go a new joint and new bushes all the way round.
best of luck
Dave

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
Thanks for all the help, Especially from Dave. I will follow your steps on the weekend and hopefully find the problem. I noticed all the rubber bushes are old and perished so i will replace them anyway. I will post my results after i`m done. Once again thanks for taking the time to explain how to do it for me. And Stevo thanks for the welcome.
