That would be funny except the way we are going you may well be right. We will have a few two year olds on the trip and we have to keep them amused somehow.

Dave...... i'm guessing its something to do with wanting an on-board compressed air supply that isnt a bulky DIY type compressor but somewhat compact (possibly engine bay or underbody mounted - driven from the tailshaft and underbody tanks?) to allow you to run air tools away from a workshop?
possibly a stupider question, but why not use an aircon compressor? i know a few of the pootrol guys use an aircon compressor with the clutch wired up so it cuts in when needed.....
I may yet, thats why I'm prototyping it.
I'm not keen on the aircon compressors as they tend to have issues with lubrication and putting lube into the air. Which has the potential to cause problems with valving and operation on some stuff that I might be running.
Hi Dave, I've got an aircon compressor out of an old chev, it's the piston type and has its own sump so there's no issues with lubrication. It's quite compact and pumps out about 7cfm from memory. You're welcome to have it, only problem is its in perth.

Hey Dave on the same subject but a slightly different track why not look at a truck/road train air compressor that they use for the brakes. They are quite high cfm and also already have a 12V clutch on them.
It is what I am going to do when I get around to it so I can run my air tools from the landy.

the guys on the patrol forums who did it IIRC used ordinary compressor/air tool oil, and afaik didnt have any issues
thats not as big a problem as you might imagine.
they dont have a 12v clutch they run constantly and use a bit of air control trickery to turn the vavling on and off....
the actual plan is thus...
fozzys getting an engine driven compressor and Ive already pretty much worked out how Im doing that.
the following mods I hope to have done prior to CCCCC
air controlled exhaust brake
air bag assist on the rear leafs so I can drop a couple of the helper leaves giving me a bit more flex in the rear end without compromising loadability
air operated park brake.
the compressor Im chasing now is the auxilary air compressor and will essentially be the same as your 240v versions of the compressor but powered by a 12v starter motor so that things like air tools and tyre inflation can be done without me having to rev the biscuts out of the 2.25 diesel. Being a basic diesel once its running if I happen to drain the battery dead flat it doesnt matter once its turning the alternator will charge batteries (at a paltry 35a/h)
the basic design principal will be a 12v starter motor battery and relay belt driving a normal compressor with a very small (1 maybe 2 liters) tank built onto the platform. then normal 240v on/off type switching found on all compressors will be used to control the starters relay.
the primary tank will be one of those "shooter" tanks that tyreshops use to "blast" tubeless tyres onto rims. this will be portable on my vehicle so it can be mounted pretty much anywhere and if needed can be used as originally intended to seat tubeless tyres
Yes, I'm already planning out my loadspace and where things will and wont be going. I know that if the aux compressor idea works that its battery will be doubling as my second battery and that it will also be providing the power for the fuel circulatory system for the WVO filtering/dewatering tank and Ive decided that as Im running as TEC that I will be cutting back on my recovery gear and field working gear as in theory as Im driving the slowest vehicle in the last position that by the time I get there then there should already be a plethora of tree beating gear and towing gear on the ground. so things like tooling and a good airsupply have been bumped up on the list...
assuming this all works to plan I'll look into knocking up some others out of leftover bits....
