Think of what you can do with $4,000 p/a :D
Ron's post is so true, I'm an ex-smoker and I really believe if a smoker could really smell how bad they reek of tobacco, esp. the girls (no perfume doesn't help) they would give it up, the smell is nauseating. A tip , use the money you save from not buying cigarettes and use it for a special project, it will help you focus and give you another reason for giving up, Regards Frank.
Well done Sleepy!! My experience was that the first week was the hardest. After that it gets easier by the day.
You won't regret it. One downside though, you tend to be able to 'taste' your food again. But hey...what's a couple extra kilos compared to the damages of smoking!
Keep up the great work
cheers
Evelyn
Damn...was hoping nobody would ask that question :whistling:. I quit last September....had a couple of "camp fire" ciggies 4 or so months later....no problem. Then on LCMP trip in March....was dumb enough to take a packet and haven't stopped till 2 weeks ago.
I went from hardly using my inhaler to using it quite a few times a day.....the martial arts I was doing...all of a sudden I was out of breath again.....not to mention the looks from family and friends.
Then a couple of weeks ago.....whilst watching The Biggest Loser....the guy who won....he lost something like 80 odd kilos...almost half his body weight at the age of 56...said something that really struck me. Most of his life he "tried" to lose weight. He was at a point when he had to stop trying and just "do it". I realised I had tried to give up smoking for the last 15 or so years and now was time to just "do it". I can't risk one cigarette as I know from previous experience, I will topple. I'm at an age where I should know better. Plus I am sick of letting myself, my family and my friends down. So now I am doing it...instead of trying to quit.
I also stopped drinking during the week...thats been almost a month now...went a full 2 weeks without a beer....and now just on the weekend. Now am feeling much better....just need to lose around 10 kilos and put myself in a position that I will one day get to see all of my 4 childrens ( assuming I dont have anymore ;)) grand children.
Regards
Stevo
sleepy, know how you feel. day two for me using the patches.
see how i go and hopefully get off the ciggies for good this time.
cheers
yorkie :)
Thanks for the encouragement everyone! And good luck to you Yorkie and Stevo
I , like Stevo, have "given up" quite a few times before. Yes the first week or so I have "the grumps" but the danger time is 3 months.
You think you have it beat, have one or two, and before you know it ....:(
This time, I must remember not to weaken , or start saying..."Just one wont hurt me"
And yes....it stinks!
Good on all those who've been successful and good luck to those still trying hard.
I wrote earlier about my own efforts 30 plus years ago after being a very heavy smoker and can now boast (sadly) that I've outlived my Father by 13 years as he died at 52 still smoking until the day he died. :(
Him and his fellow patients in hospital, virtually all with smoke related diseases, used to sit outside having a fag (to help clear their chests!!!) with their oxy bottles beside them....mask off, have a puff and mask back on again!
And the medical staff allowed that to go on but hopefully in these more enlightened times it would be stopped.
Keep it up everyone, just take a sniff of a smoker and that will help...YUK.:o
Cheers.
Alan.
Hi Sleepy,
A year and a half ago I had a 50 a day habit. Had smoked for most of 35 years, but still quite fit.
Was having a very bad stretch where everything was turning to merde. Was waiting to get all my email stuff loaded onto a new computer when I got a call to say it would take all day. Looked at the 3 cigs left in the packet and just thought 'stuff all of this, when these are gone, that's it'. And it was on Jan 7 2008.
I had wanted to stop, but was too soft. All I can say is HTF up and just do it if you really want to. Recognize and acknowledge to yourself that you'll want more, but that you don't have to do it.
Good luck with it!
cheers, DL
Hi again,
I know I'm quoting myself here, but I was 'interrupted' while writing the post by my dying father on the phone. He would have smoked a pipe for 60 years and it is probably part of his anatomy now. He is dying of non smoking causes.
Anyway............ the other things I wanted to say were:
1. My ex-habit would cost me 9.5k pa now.
2. No-one at the time could believe that I could quit and this 'momentous
event' has inspired several others to do similar. Be warned.... some of
these people have stacked the kg's on.
cheers, DL
