Pardon my ignorance, but why dont they have a shovel?

Besides, they probably forgot to lock the hubs in....

An update has just been released:

Police locate two men stranded in bushland - Oberon

    Tuesday, 16 Sep 2008 02:56pm

Two men stranded in bushland in the state’s central west overnight have been freed and are returning to their Sydney homes.

The men, aged 28 and 37, contacted Triple Zero (000) just before 4pm yesterday to advise their silver-coloured Toyota Hilux 4WD had become bogged in the Hampton State Forest, near Oberon.

Based on Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates provided by the men, police from Chifley Local Area Command searched bushland near Wicketty War Creek last night.

However, the poor state of local tracks after two days of heavy rain, and fading light, prevented police from continuing into the forest.

About 8pm, a second unsuccessful attempt was made to locate the stranded pair via another access route.

The search for the pair resumed about 7.15am today and involved police from the Chifley Local Area Command and Oberon State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers.

An alternative route to the location was identified by rescuers and involved the use of trails which were in poor condition.

The men were located about 10am at a campfire approximately 200 metres from their vehicle, which they had used for shelter overnight. The vehicle was able to be winched onto stable land and driven from the area.

Despite being cold and having little sleep, the men were otherwise uninjured.

I'm sure one of them is Richard Cranium .

Good bloody grief, the area is renowned for vehicles getting stuck after rain, it's red sticky clay and lots of up and down steep hills, which makes some of the tracks almost undrivable after rain and going into this area with know way of recovering yourself is just plain stupid, even the comp guys won't go there after rain, in the dry most of the tracks are a piece of cake.

This might give you an idea of what the area is like, this is one part of a 200m winch to get up this track.

Should have walked to the Hampton Pub, had a good nights sleep and asked for some help in the morning. They could have led the recovery vehicle in there in the morning. Lots of 4x4s from club trips stop at the pub and probably for a couple of slabs they would have saved everyone a lot of trouble.
Too many toys and not enough common sense.

Yep, I agree with everyone's assessment. There would be no way we would call the emergency services etc, unless it was an emergency! How embarrassing!

So who's up for a drive?

I'm just glad the report shows what Triple Zero looks like. I did wonder up until now...
