Standard Defender rims are 16" diameter by 5.5" wide and the 235/16's are recommended for rims of 6" to 7" wide. Defender alloys are 7" as are Disco steels.

Grab a second hand set of disco rims, if you haven't got them on it already, and get a set of 255/85 Maxxis Bighorns. Awesome tyre that are quiet on road and brilliant off it. I've got a set of 245/75's on my disco and love them so much we'll be getting a set of 255/85's for our fender.

The previous owner sounds like he has put 215/80 from a Disco on it. You can go wider up to about 245/70 before it rubs on the chassis and you require modified rims

The basic standard Landrover tyre is the 7.50r16 or 235/80 - 32 inch. 265/70 is good too.

After that, you get the size 315/75 (I think that's right) which is also called a 33.

However, the old terms 31-32-33 can also refer to 15 inch diameter rims using 'Flotation' tyres

As you may imagine, the bigger the tyre, the bigger the cost.

I have 235/80 BFG AT's and it works for me. Cost about 250 ea.

I'm pretty sure they usually use 235/85-16 and the wider 32" alternative is 265/75-16. The 265/70-16 are typically a Patrol type 31" tyre equivilent.

315/75-16 is generally considered a 35" (34.7")

285/75-16 and 305/70-16 are roughly 33" though, with 255/85-16 being a fraction taller again but still a 33".
