Lucky boy.
Time to google tyre sizes and related stuff. After you do that and are up to speed on the different types and sizes, your defender can have a good selection of rims and tyres.
All your wheels must have a PCD of 5 x 6.5inch.
Standard defender steel rims are 16 inch diameter by 6.5 inch wide. Discovery rims are 7 inches wide. Sunraysia's (Sunnys) usually are 7 inch and sometimes are 8 inch wide.
The previous owner sounds like he has put 215/80 from a Disco on it. You can go wider up to about 245/70 before it rubs on the chassis and you require modified rims
The basic standard Landrover tyre is the 7.50r16 or 235/80 - 32 inch. 265/70 is good too.
After that, you get the size 315/75 (I think that's right) which is also called a 33.
However, the old terms 31-32-33 can also refer to 15 inch diameter rims using 'Flotation' tyres
As you may imagine, the bigger the tyre, the bigger the cost.
I have 235/80 BFG AT's and it works for me. Cost about 250 ea.
Now, are you confused yet? Search tyres in this forum and you'll find heaps of threads. Its a big topic and there is a lot of things you need to know.

Mums- stock 92 200tdi d1.
Id go for a set of 255/85/16 on either standard fender rims or get some D1 rims flipped/reversed to gain offset and run with that ...
Or go all out like my brother has with his county lift it up a tad in the coils and run 37in MTR's on 15x8 rims with 50mm offset![]()
Mate if i was you a set of sunny's and a set of Maxxis Bighorns . They are a cheaper tyre than others but mine are wearing well and love to flick mud. they are brilliant on and off road . Few other guys here have the maxxis bighorns and they all love them . Good luck with what you choose
.
BFG Mud Terrain 255/85 R16s are BIG and will fit OK on standard Disco1 rims under a County or tdi Fender and currently cost $292 each F&B (no tubes) for a set of 4.
One matter to keep in mind is that if you want to run them tubeless (which is preferable), then Disco rims are a good idea as standard Fender rims (while they will hold the air) do not have the tyre retention groove.

What he said x2
Grab a second hand set of disco rims, if you haven't got them on it already, and get a set of 255/85 Maxxis Bighorns. Awesome tyre that are quiet on road and brilliant off it. I've got a set of 245/75's on my disco and love them so much we'll be getting a set of 255/85's for our fender.
