Question for Handyman/ plumber types.

G'day All,

As I have received such excellent advice/ tips before, here is another question that hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Our tap/ spout has had a little leak and been a bit wobbly at the base. Last night it came out. It had some "white" kinda stuff around the seal which I assume held it in place?? Though that stuff was shredded so cleaned it all up. Put the spout back in place........no go...water goes everywhere. What do I need to do? Also when the spout is out, should water still be coming through even with the taps turned off? Hopefully my pics will make more sense that what I am saying:

Do I need a whole new spout, is there some kind of glue/ plumbing stuff that you use. Any help/ direction would be great as SWMBO has already snarled that she wish I knew more handyman things

PTFE tape......got some if you need it or you can pick it up at most hard ware stores

It looks like you need to replace the 2 O-rings (black rubber seals).
You will also need some suitable grease to use during assembly.

Check out your local plumbers supplies or Bunnings. Take the spout with you so that they can match the O-rings, if no luck with the O-rings try a bearing supplier they should be able to help.

Yes definitely looks like you need new O rings there. Bunnings ( or equiv ) will have them in little yellow bubble packs ( "Fix-A-Tap" I think ). Just cut off the old O rings with a Stanley knife and slip new ones on with a bit of that white grease, you can also get from the same area.

I think there should be a grub screw to hold the spout in place. It screws into the groove above the two O rings, probably a tiny hex key thing.

Tap shouldn't leak when the taps are turned off, you need new washers for the taps.

there is a grub screw that holds the spout in the socket, make sure it hasnt fallen out and down the drain.You also need new tap washers if it leaks when the tap is off.

See, I knew there would be good advice. I went and unscrewed the base and found what must be the "grub screw". Its not the taps themselves that leak, it has been the spout out the end dripping and where it slots into the base. So changing the orings should fix that? Or is there a problem with the taps themselves hence why water is still coming out the spout. If so where do you fix that? Will take spout part to Bunnings, again thanks for the advice, SWMBO will be impressed if I can fix this

The leaks from the base of the spout are caused by the o-rings. If it is leaking from the end of the spout (where the water should come from when you turn the tap on), then one of both tap washers will need doing as well.

The tap handles have to come off, maybe a straight pull up on those pictured. Then you unscrew the tap body. At the bottom of the tap body is the washer, which slides into the tap body on a shaft.

Good idea also to check the side of the tap that is attached to the bench, if the brass bit that the washer sits on is pitted or worn you either need it reseated, - ground flat with a reseating tool, done in place - a fancy washer, or new plumbing.
