    Glass bowl Air intake

    Just wanted to know

What does the snorkell with the round glass/plastic bowl top do that the other dont, you seem to see them on Toyota's that come from the back of beyond. Did land rover ever fit this type??

filters out a heap of stuff prior to it making it to the filters etc.

i run one on my defender.

you have to match the size of the bowl to the cuft/min your engine consumes.. most put to big a bowl on and lose the benefits that can be gained...

    they are called a precleaner.

It's a Donaldson pre-cleaner filter that goes on top of the snorkel (e.g. Safari) and is mainly used in harsh environments (mining, desert travel etc etc). The idea being that the Donaldson picks up a lot of the garbage before it gets to your normal filter, prolonging its life and providing added filtration.
The idea being you can whip the Donaldson off at the end of the day, clean it out and whack it back on ready for tomorrow! Most snorkels have a removable air intake so there's no reason you couldn't fit one before a trip.
I can't say for sure but I wouldn't think anything "rolled off the production line" with them, but would have been supplied as per customer's instructions to a dealer.
I have no idea what is in the protrusion at the top of a Mantec snorkel, but I'm sure plenty will...
    Cheers

I had one of those given to me.
I have one of those oiled foam "socks" that goes over the standard snorkel intake too. Which would be the most effective ?
    ( sorry is this technically a hijack ? )

I have one, this reminds me i'll need to put it back on, it does do the job, i have a Uni Filter, when i checked it, the filter was much cleaner with the Donaldson pre-cleaner on than it was with the standard ram air top on.

So i will change it tonight

We had the pre-cleaners and the socks for our Simpson Desert / Central Aus trip. (SIII Petrol & 200Tdi Defender).

Surprisingly the socks collected a whole lot more than the precleaners did. Though if you're following a car in really heavy dust, you can sometimes see the precleaner fill up! (or so it seemes). The precleaner uses a cyclonic effect which throws out particles within a certain size/weight range.

The Safari Snorkel for the 300Tdi and the TD5 can't take the smaller bowl, and the 12" diameter bowl is just asking for trouble, so you may have to settle for a sock anyway. The one in Incs pic (300Tdi - Snorkel on right) has a reducing adaptor by the look of it.

I had a pre cleaner on during our recent Madigan trip, when I got back it had around 30mm of dust in it, if it hadn't been there this would all have been in the air filter (which was replaced anyway).

Pretty well covered above. Just add that they have been pretty much standard equipment on tractors, bulldozers and all other offroad equipment for at least the last fifty years, and were in use on tractors before the first world war.
