    I've bought a Jeep. Sorry.

    Hi,

Well we moved from Adelaide to Salt Lake City, Utah, 3 weeks ago. We bought the missus a Nissan X-terra shortly after arriving, as she insisted on something reliable

That took us over budget, so left me with a certain amount to spend. Deefers are too expensive, so I had my heart set on an 03/04 Disco. I've looked at about 12 so far, they were all either dogs or heading that way. 3 refused to start at dealerships, and all had niggles which I would not have been happy with. Very disappointing, plus insurance and parts are apparently pretty pricey. LR3's were too expensive.

So I looked at Jeeps. Wranglers did appeal in a way, but only four seats is really no go and used prices are pretty solid. So I happened upon a Jeep Commander at a dealership. Clearly designed by a stylist who decided only to use straight lines that day, it is not going to win any beauty contests

It's a 2006 model, 30k miles, leather, 7 seats (rear ones Ok if you are Douglas Bader or a kid) and what swayed it for rest of the family, DVD player with wireless headphones. So 2 years newer then the Disco's and still in warranty. It had depreciated 21K in 2 years - ouch!

It's a shame I'm not staying with LR as my daily driver, but my consolation prize is that my Stage 1 is on the way and should be here in about 6 weeks

Anyway, all the best from the good old US of A. You guys really are in the Lucky Country, we miss it.

    Chaz

Too bad about the Defender. Strange how the car mad USA treats it. Still buying a jeep isn't too bad, you could have bought one of those fugly great pickups they drive around in.

I suppose you should explain an X-Terra is kind of an X-Trail on steroids.

Agreed about the Deefers, cheapest one I have seen so far was $25k US for a 1997 90 with 110K miles on it.

Those pickups are bloody awful, agreed. Not my thing at all.

The X-terra is pretty good, to be fair. 4.0 V6, solid, reliable, low range for offroad. As the place we are looking to live has up to 5 feet of snow in winter, I wanted the missus in something reliable and safe.

    Pics to follow

    Cheers

It is a nissan pathfinder. I wouldn't invite one round for dinner just in case they wanted one of your daughters to add to there collection of wives.

Er, no, it's not. Pathfinder is longer with bigger overhang. Compare the two.

You have a point about the wives though

I would think that is what Australia would see as the direct Pathfinder replacement. The old Aussie sold Pathfinder was about the same size as your wife's car. The new Pathfinder we get in Australia is much bigger as you said.

If I was sent to the US I'd go a 74 Bronco with column shift auto and a Windsor 351. Also pick up a 66 Ford Galaxie. Maybe a 62 Continental...

X2 or an Inter Scout or a CJ Jeep........Jeep Comanche (sp?) if I wanted a ute.

Ive owned 2 Jeeps, 1 great and 1 terrible, but it is true, even over here they depreciate much quicker than most cars and I for 1 dont understand why, they just dont seem to sell secondhand.

They are a good truck as far as I know but if your after an Aussie point of veiw from other owners check out AUSJEEPOFFROAD - Powered by vBulletin, there are some good folks on there as well.
