    It doesn't add up

Just noticed this news item about paid maternity and paternity leave.

Mothers may get 18 weeks of maternity leave - Yahoo!7 News

But then I read the following:

About 140,000 mothers would be eligible for the payments each year, along with an estimated 225,000 fathers.

I would have thought if there was 140,000 mothers, there'd be... 140,000 fathers So where do the other 85,000 dads fit in to the picture

    It's a 2 for 1 deal

No what they mean is that it will be in place of the Baby bonus and only eligable to women/men that have been working for 12 months prior to the birth.

So what they are saying is that 85,000 out of 225,000 women dont work 12 months before their baby is born........but their hubbies can take the 18 weeks.

Im not sure if I prefer that over the baby bonus but it is much the same thing really but just cutting out the few silly girls that have had Babys just to get the baby bonus......and then realised that their baby costs a hell of a lot to run

Well, won't that make women over 50 desirable employees. Won't go on mat. leave, and a good percentage will retire before being eligible for long service leave.

biggest rip off in history, for example when State Govt brought in 6 weeks paid maternity/parental leave, Policeman for example applied for 6 weeks paid leave when stay at home wives had baby to be allegedly primary care giver to baby but went out playing golf and fishing.

if you want kids learn to pay for them yourselves

You breed 'em, you feed 'em!!! My politics are pretty well left wing but I can sympathise with employers having this foisted upon them. You do employ staff to work.

If the employers are required to fund it, then, if I was a small business owner, I'd be looking at off-loading any fecund female employees - without it looking like discrimination....
