I will admit I like to use PVC pipe and flex joints to mock up a snorkle and there is more than one 4x4 getting around with one of my mockups still fitted.

You forgot to mention the 2 important points
A: It's removable
B: It works
Obviously not a problem with the D3 in the picture (now) don't know when the picture came out. What does one do if the manufacturers don't make a snorkel for your particular model? I have never seen a complete snorkel kit for a P38a or RRC or a 4bd1 County for that matter. So if your going to have to source all the pipe, elbows, angles and such for under the bonnet why buy a complete kit to accomodate the look of a normal snorkel then chuck away half the kit because it is not required? I have seen some very good home made snorkels that one would have to look twice to confirm that they are not aftermarket productions. I have also seen some absolute shockers that look like the abomination on the D3.
no!!!...and it beats being ripped off buy the powers that be ;)...why else are we all helping each other come up with ways to beat the powers to be ....if its OK to build some draws for the back of your truck .....(at a tenth of the cost !!!!)..then its certainly OK to build a bloody snorkel ;)......whatever your happy with mate its your truck and yo have to live with it.:D
me!..... l like the way Mantecs go into the guard and when i find a really good looking way to do l will ..again at a tenth of the cost:D
cheers

Thanks for pointing that out Dobbo, :D seems to be lost on some. ;)
The others were available at the time but didn't want to put holes in the fender and didn't want it on when I didn't need it.
If you read the post, I made it after a nasty scare on the Kowmung crossing.
Most of the time it is off and looks better then than if it had a safarion.
This again proves to be a divisive issue; whether you put mods on that do not look good.
Some think it is ok, others think the looks are more important than functionality or practicality.
A removable snorkel makes a lot of sense if it only goes on when you do a water crossing which isnt that often for most people. So what if its ugly or has a lot of frictional losses if it only appears for a water crossing.
After fitting my Safari snorkel, I think performance actually decreased. It certainly didnt increase as touted by the manufacturers.
I have another idea that I used and I think it actually looked fine. I got flexi tube from clark rubber and made a nice looking snorkel for about $60. I used pvc pipe in it to keep the hose straight where it needed to be.

It would make sense that performance decreased with a snorkel, although the difference would be pretty small (particularly with a turbocharger where the turbo would usually make up for the increased restriction).
But it is a mistake to assume that snorkels are useful only for deep water crossings. In fact, their main use is to extend the period between filter services in dusty conditions, and to a small degree to intake cooler air.
