I know the D3 has a different engine but I am sure there was a change to something in the later D2 V8.

About 2001 , The D2 V8 changed from a GEMS managed V8 with low compression ratio (circa 8.13:1) to the Thor Bosch V8 with Motronic ECU but with low compression. Same V8 different inlet manifold to give more low down torque.
In late 2003? the Thor engine was changed to high compression (circa 9.35:1 )as 98 octane became generally available in Australia.
All the 4.0 V8s have the same heads, block , etc. the only major differences are the pistons for LC vs HC, the engine Management system, and the Thor inlet manifold.
The Bosch ECU generally gives very tight control of timing and fuel and I understand from talking to an owner of both a HC and Lc that the HC was considerably better in economy.

Well, there you go. I thought all D2s had the Thor engine. I know that late D1s in the USA (and elsewhere?) had the GEMS engine.

    Noz

The wife and I have a 2004 D2, and fuel economy is not too bad...well...better than the "Exploder" we used to own(sshh..dont tell anyone)

Around town I think she gets 450-500 to a tank...maybe more. I dont drive it alot..well...plus the fact that when I drive it it uses more fuel for some straaaaange reason!!!!!

550-600km on the hwy....I;d really like it if she actually took note of how far she gets to a tank

Reduced servicing costs, plus the fact its got lotsa get up and go won me over!!

    Ahhhh.... It makes sense now.

Basically, the engines didn't change... The Australian spec changed.

Thor has always been available in High & Low compression. The Low compression (without Cat IIRC) being sent out to Africa, Oz, RoW, etc... where as the High comp engine (with Cat) has always been used in Europe and those other areas with the tighter emissions.

Thor with Bosch are (were) on the 2 early 1999 D2 V8s I have owned. Cats are fitted on these early (Low Compression) cars too.

I am uncertain about the change from LC to HC in D2 but I did test-drive a 2001 and it was HC (and you could feel it - more torque).

I am only guessing, but the late D2 V8 is probably the Thor HC.
