    Long Motor 300tdi

Been having some probs with the 300TDI of late and are looking at $3800 to fix it all up. Does anyone know what a new long motor is worth and if it includes the gear box?

Im debating wether it's worth replacing the head and valves or if I should just start from scratch with a new bottom end as well.

Im guessing around $7000 for a full long motor installed. Any thoughts??

A long motor doesn't include a gearbox. Long engines are basically rocker cover to sump with no manifolds, oil coolers or any ancilliarys. This is a Mitsubishi 6D14 truck long motor off my floorstock.

Before you replace the whole engine, assess what is needed first. Heads are readily available and the bottom end may be fine if not for a bearing replacement. Early 300's had a problem with the composite head gasket and a modification was made. The late head will fit both early and late versions and uses a steel laminate gasket and is also a huge improvement over the early ones.

PM me if you need further details.

just going through the process now not much change out of $9g by time you add in all the other little bits such as filters, oil, coolant, gaskets, it's suprising how all these little things add up to. was quoted $6500 for new crate engine but then still need injectors oils etc so either way you still forking out a heap.

$6500 is cheap for a long motor, I was quoted near $10 out of the crate about 2 years ago for a freinds car.

A long motor needs manifolds, turbo, injectors, water pump, power steering pump, alternator, air con pump and all the braketry changed over as well as lift pump, vac pump etc etc.

A long motor is basically a short motor with the head bolted down and no more.

If it's only going to cost $3k to fix the one you have, fix it as there is no cheap way out of it.

But if you have $10k to spend on the car you could slot in a new crate engine and rebuild your box and then the heart is all new and you will only have to worry about everything else.

A TDI disco or fender is not worth having 10k spent on, the bottom ends seem to be fairly robust so i would just replace the head if you need to and re use the ancillaries you have.

it might have been 8500 but like you say need to put all the bits on so might as well get turbos and injector pump etc done since spending that kind of doe. I went through all the pros and cons and decided that it was worth it as my disco has a fair bit of kit on it. so basicly have a new truck for fraction of price of a D3(which my mrs is nagging me for) I went for the recon option as worked out but 3g cheaper than new crate engine. My engine had 300km on the clock and got cooked so had no other option if I could have gotten away with new head that is all I would have done.
