    Search is your friend.
There are numerous posts on thsi on my RRC and on a Disco.
The answer is Yes, there is a big benefit.
and No you do not get extra economy from a muffler.

I heard that chipping a V8 gave very little extra oommph - unlike the TD5 diesel chip.

I investigated this when I had my Disco and for the then $1K cost - the couple of KW and NM wasn't worth it.

I will be posting shortly before and after dyno results of a 3.9 30% power upgrade path that only involved intake, exhaust and rechipping (change standard fuel map). On final tune I stopped short of putting on a piggyback chip like unichip or haltech as the gains minimal and certainly not for the $ involved.

How do you know unless you have done it???
I now have 50% more power from 1500RPM, with my Thor inlet, heads and unichip.
The Unichip added about 18% AFAIR at low revs.
The main gains are from the ability to tailor an advance curve, which the 14CUX has no ability to do.

I think you are on a better track here, better air flow and a bit more fuel to account for the extra air flow is the best way to get power out of one. But when it comes to V8's more power generally means more fuel consumption, depending on how you drive it, but there is no point spending the dollars on extra power if you never use it so you dont use more fuel. matt

I would be very surprised if piggy back chip only (Unichip and Haltech Inteceptor), clean throttle & plenum and someone who knows their business tuning if this didn't get give a 3.9L a 20% lift like Philip A says.

I have 85Kw now out of a 150K motor already with set described above. Aiming now for north of 100 Kw with heads, plenum job and Haltech. New torquer Piper cam I am thinking about.

I did a touch more reasearch and will be getting the RPI ECU chip and some heads and cam/timing set from RPI early nexy year.

The haltech or Uni Chip (piggy back) is still the best basic mod for timing control and advance, not to mention its ability to fine tune any irregularities between blocks and ancillaries/modifications.

I am pulling 83kw (in third) with what seems to be heads that are in need of rebuilding (lots of brown/black crap up inside) on a motor and auto that has done over 240000 and has not yet been opened (so I have been told).

So far the piggy back chip has been absolutely brilliant in extracting a bit more power and economy from my 3.9 and I would happily reccomend it to all, just as it was recomended to me
