Question Anyone Driving Along Clear Mtn Road, Cashmere?

I have a favour to ask of anyone who happens to be driving along Clear Mountain Rd, Cashmere in the next few days (or even this afternoon).

I need to know for sure exactly where the Telstra telephone exchange is located. Telstra give an address that is 1 Clear Mtn Rd - all the way down the southern end of the road where it meets Eatons Crossing Rd. But a website that proclaims to identify where all Telstra exchanges are (www.adsl2exchanges.com.au) places it up near the intersection of Clear Mtn Rd and Old School Rd.

We are considering moving into our rental property near there but if I cannot get a suitable ADSL2 speed it is not an option.

Google Earth co-ordinates would be great, but even a descriptive location (ie. between such-and-such streets) would be helpful.

I don't know what one would look like, but exactly 1100m along Clear Mountain Road from the Eatons Crossing Road side there is a fenced off demountable. There was a graffiti'd sign saying private property keep out. But nothing saying what it was. Had several air conditioning units.
    Could it be the exchange?
    Not very helpfull am I.

If you have tenants in there with phone connected, just use their number to do the online enquiry to find out, or if you know someone close by use their number. Thats what I did when I moved, used the number of a business around the corner and it told me adsl2 was available to that number

Just typed in the number for clear mountain health resort, just up the road from there on TPG and it reckons standard adsl with speeds up to 8000k are available

That doesn't give any sort of accurate estimate of the actual line speed. It only tells you who will service you and what the "minimum" speed they are prepared to guarantee. Telstra, in their wisdom, have said I will have to actually sign-up for ADSL2 before they can do the necessary checks to see what my real speed will be. The technician said if I stipulate a particular line speed when I sign up then I will be able to cancel the application if I find out it's not fast enough. Of course this will be after they have taken my money and, based on past experience, I would rather work it out for myself than take Telstra's word for anything.

I know it's not an exact science, but if I can at least get an approximate distance from the exchange, then there is plenty of information about line attenuation to tell me if this property is a go-er or not for business.

And BTW, there is also NO cable.

    Found It!

I gave up and just decided to go for a drive on the week-end and found the exchange. Sure enough, it is about 3km from where Telstra and the rest of the internet info says it should be. It is in an insulated, demountable style air conditioned box in a secure compound - definitely the exchange and not something else.

This puts it exactly 2.2km from the house - via road - which means I will HAVE to get Telstra to physically test the line to find out the real speed. Hopefully it is at teh higher end of what I can expect (ie 16Mb).

Where I am now I should theoretically be getting 22Mb but I only get 16Mb. Not bad at all, but it just goes to show how much unforseen attenuation there can be beyond what the rules state.
