Victorians caught speeding <10k/m over limit

I wouldn't mind so much with the enforcement of the speed limits if they actually bothered to spend any time changing some of the other dangerous habbits that seem to be the norm here too.

You can be paying no attention to what you're doing, wandering across lanes, texting on your mobile, playing with your hair, being completely distracted by screaming kids in the back, hell even reading the paper whilst driving like i saw someone doing the other morning - but so long as you're going under the speed limit it's all ok, you're able to feel smug and confident that you're a "safe" driver.

Seems the public is so brainwashed by the speed is evil message that there's no room left for any further thinking on the matter of what other actions cause the quality of driving in this country to be so completely dire.

and my absoloute aussie favourite, driving whilst drinking alcohol....

Speeding is a crime and thats why you get fined

Road safety is not justification for speed cameras, radar traps cause they would re-educate the offenders about road safety requirements and need to comply rather than fine or remove license rather than fine.

Government commitment to road safety can be seen by measures like compulsory seat belts, that is vehicle design and manufacturing standards, quality of road surfaces, removal of potential hazards from side of roads like trees or telegraph poles situated too close to roadside, regular vehicle safety checks.

Is it a crime? I always though a traffic infringement is not a criminal offence.

They are all crimes, in general practice misdemenors are not considered indictable offences which equate to a felony in the US. Therefore misdemenors are not considered criminal offences, however failure to pay a fine for a misdemenor is an indictable offence and even not turning up for a court appearence is an indictable offence, even where the original charge that sent you to court gets dismissed. So you may be inocent of the original crime but become a convicted criminal because of the process.

Or that's my read of it.

If you waht to know officially what a crime is look in your state's legal database. In NSW it's the Crimes Act 1900

In europe the speedo can be up to 10% over, but is never allowed to be under. In all cars I have ever driven with the speedo dead on 100, the tomtom usually says about 90-95. As much as I hate these revenue generators there is no excuse for getting caught. SO to be going over 100, your speedo will be reading 105-110. I guess the rules are similar here?

Most cameras in the UK are bright yellow. If you didnt see one then you were either going far too fast anyway or are far too blind to be driving.

The north bound entrance to the lane cove tunnel is rediculous drops to 70km/h for no apparent reason - I got done here for ignoring the rather large 70 signs on my first trip through there. But I was an idiot for not being more aware and paid the fine.

I'm definitely no saint....

In my driving career I've had a compulsory 3 month walk for losing too many points.. I've donated in excess of $15000.00 (yes that IS correct) to the SA revenue and been defected for driving a 'track only' vehicle on a public road :(

I think I also hold the SA record with 12 speed camera and 1 radar infringement in a single day :eek:

I have since become wiser and happy to say since 1998 have not had a single infringement notice.

Nowadays, yes, I do occasionally drift over the limit - mostly during overtaking on the highway (I consider slightly elevated speeds safer as they reduce time in the oncoming lane)...

I understand that this is breaking the laws...

I also accept that if I do (either deliberately or not) exceed the limits imposed for the area, that I am solely responsible for my choice / inattentiveness, and therefore liable to punishment under the current laws.

Should I blame the government? The Cop? The legislature?

No.... I can only blame the idiot at the controls......

my one infringement for speeding was 85 in a 60 zone.

I knew the road and they had changed the speed limit and put signage up appropriately.

I got away with a lesser fine and when apprehended I made mention of the urmm no its a 90 zone same as the rest of the highway... the cop took me back to where the signs were and when we got back there was a road train pulled over infront of the sign so only one was visable.

he let me off with only 11K over the limit.

Maybe he was, like me, annoyed at the second part of the sentence that seems to make an assumption which IMHO is ridiculous. That is, everyone around you is doing the speed limit.

Having said that most of us can tell after a few years of driving the difference between 100 & 106 regardless of what the surrounding traffic is doing and if you can't then consider the fine the cost of being a slow learner.

I agree with Fusion and others that you only have yourself to blame.

But what I find most interesting is this excerpt frrm the document that started this thread "An official warning will not be given for red light, mobile phone, seatbelt or generally any serious road safety offence...."

This seems to imply that speeding less than 10kph over the limit is not considered a serious offence. So much for every K over is a killer.

My Father-in-Law's GPS speedo thing is a pain. It gets the zone wrong and keeps telling you every few seconds that you're speeding when you're not.

Go back to using a proper map - and looking for road signs, and watching for speed limit signs & remembering them I say.
