    1972 SWB Info

    G'day,

I am currently eyeing of a SWB near my work and I am trying to get a hold of the owner to start wheeling and dealing but I would like some advice from all of you gurus as to an honest price for an honest truck.

It's a 1972 SWB hard top petrol, There is minimal surface rust and seems to be in great condition body wise and was road registered up until April of this year. The engine has seized so I'm unable to get an idea of the condition of the Diffs, T-case and gear box but i'm guessing they're not too bad. My plan is a full rebuild so i'm not too worried if they're all buggered.

Could someone give me a ball park figure? I can get photo's up in the next few days if you need them.

    Engine # 90120457A
    Chassis # QOBD297
    Model # 00001

Any other info or help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Fish.

It is very difficult to put a price on, as it is entirely dependent on condition. Having a seized engine is not a good start.

The chassis number is not a Landrover one, it looks like one assigned by the Queensland authorities (I have a similar situation with my 2a - they could not find the number on the chassis). It would be worth finding the story behind this if you can.

Until metal prices dropped in the last few months the floor (scrap) price would have been around $500, and with a non functioning engine and nothing known about the rest of the vehicle, I would be very reluctant to pay more than something like this.

Why is the engine seized? The engine is not prone to doing this - most likely reason is either it has been grossly abused by being run without oil, or has been allowed to stand with water in the cylinders, either from immersion or a leaking headgasket or cracked head or block.

If it has been reasonably looked after (which may be questionable considering the engine), the most likely problems are chassis and bulkhead rust, electrical problems, and gearbox. If it has been standing for a while, expect to have to replace all the rubber bits at least in the brakes.

Worth noting that with the current economic downturn, prices of all cars, new or secondhand, are very likely to change, and the change is going to be down.

    Hope this helps

I tend to agree. With the economy the way it is, I'd be looking for something that runs and drives - basically buy the best one you can afford. Then you can give it a good service, fix any annoying faults and get on with enjoying it. Driving is better than fixing and with any Land Rover you're likely to be doing a bit of both.

It's worth noting that buying a vehicle in good condition is almost always cheaper than rebuilding one that is worn out.

As for price, look at it as a collection of potential spares for a vehicle you don't have. When you do buy a good vehicle, it's unlikely you'll need much off the one near your work. If it doesn't have some great features, like brand new tyres, I wouldn't bother. Either that or don't pay more than a few hundred dollars.

    Cheers for the quick replies.

The Landy is sitting in a mechanics yard waiting for the owner to get some funds to fix it but it's been there for a while. I'll chat to the mechanic next week and find out whats wrong and why (if he knows)

You've probably read it a hundred times on the forum and seen no results but I'm not too worried about the engine and running gear because I plan to upgrade it all with stronger stuff, this 4by will be my toy so it'll need to be able to handle some hard off road work. It's also going to be my project as i want to learn to do body work, painting, welding, mechanics and auto electrical.

It won't be a monster but it won't be showroom original by a long shot.

Thank you for the guesstimate on the price, I was hoping 500ish but thinking 1000ish so I'm happy I didn't peak to early when bartering

I have about 5 photo's but I don't know how to put them on, I'd say they need to be shrunk as the camera is an 8mp. Can anyone send me a link or some info and I'll post them in the coming days.

    Cheers

$500ish depending on why its siezed...

sounds like it would be a great vehicle to do a

"heres how much abuse you can throw at a 2.25 and still make it run"

I reckon that providing it hasnt thrown a leg that you can get it to running without taking it apart.

heres a couple of WAGs as to why it siezed....

it was over revved once to often during a gear change orr (more likely) it was run out of oil due to a leaking rear main seal.
