Which Landy for a Tuff truck?!

I have been fantasizing for a while now about buying another Landy to set up as more of a hard ore offroad beast. While I love my D2 its still too ncie to really go feral on it, although I did think about a body lift, 35s with bead lockers, front /rear diff locks, comp front bar etc...but then sense got a hold of me again. Plus I would like to keep it setup as it is for outback touring.

So, thinking about what alternatives are out there I am thinking of either a mid eighties (or there about) Rangie, a V8 D1, or a V8 County 110. I would really like a V8 D90 but not many of them around and a Td5 extreme is beyond the budget.

So what are the pros and cons of each of these models for offroad ability? The scope for any project would be a sole tough day/weekend tripper meant to tackle hard tracks, so it would have the full kit including front tube bar with highmount, rocksliders, all body protection, rear bar with carrier if possible, on board compressor and tank, front/rear lockers with upgraded axles etc, minimum 35's, racing seats and maybe even a rollcage of some sort. Whether I will have the guts to drive the thing is another matter, but this is what I would want to be aiming at.

I must say that I am leaning towards the County at the moment...nothing like the Defender look with a V8 growl! But I like the driving position of Discos, and Rangies...well they are just tough and have good articulation.

So what do you guys think? What would be the best Landy to take on for such a project and which would be the most capable once you had all this gear on it? What are the pros and cons of each model?

    Cheers

    Angus

imo you could make all as capable as each other but for the money at the minute you cant go wrong with a series 1 disco (have to be a 3 door tho, so you could bob it)- heaps about for very little money especially v8's and almost as many bolt on's available as a deefer/county (probably more here in oz).

The 90 is far too short for what they do in comp here in Aus . In the Uk my challenge spec 90 was ideal but i am glad i did not bring it here as it would be useless here

I would say the best is a Disco 1 V8. Alot of car for not alot of money .

I would either go the rangie or the county, or maybe an old series3 shorty with disco axles (coils springs) and a v8 conversion

    I would say the Rangie.

Looking at ground clearance, the Defenders will need to run a lot more ground clearance than the D1 or RRC. They need to do this because they are long, and its also the reason why the Cruisers and Patrols are all comping with 5-7" lift springs, an then tyres. The RRC, although they are coming up in ride height as the calibre of the competition increases, its still does not need anything nearly like that of the LWB vehicles. The other benefit of this is that they are more stable on the side angle without changing to offset 10" rims.

The RRC also has a lower CofG than the D1 with its lower roofline and aluminum rather than steel roof. The RRC is also a lighter vehicle, and then lighter again once you gut them, and when gutted they also lift up in the rideheight.

You will also find a lot of people say that the lowest point of the 4WD is the diffs so you don't need to lift it..... If you follow this theory, and it also is associated with body lifting rather than spring lifting, then you will also spend some time on your belly in the rock etc.

Something worth considering though is what tyre you want to run, how you want to drive it, how much it weighs and how you will make the driveline tolerate all of this, and if you are looking to abuse this, there is also good value to look beyond LandRover equipment - use your head here, not your heart, and enjoy cheap trips rather than breakdowns and expense.

I tend to also think that the 100" wheelbase works well, though this is mainly becuase they dont get stuck in LWB holes - the wheelbase/rideheight is fine for climbing and decending.
    Cheers

Optimum wheel base for OBC etc is 100"

Most comp. patrols etc in the OBC are shorties lengthened to 100" or LWB cut back to 100"

Um...yeah...that is what I want. What do you want for it?!

Just to clarify, I dont want to do up a Landy for the Tuff Truck Challenge, I just want to do up a tough truck for the weekend.

So, a few different opinions. Slunnie - so do you mean consider a Rangie but swapping out Patrol or Landcruiser 60 axles?
