just remember the factor is hp = 4/3 of a kw, close enough for government work. After 30+ years of compulsory metrication, some industries still use many imperial measures and will continue to as people like it, understand it, and it is used overseas by customers and suppliers. Horsepower is the classic example.

A few dates from the history of the metric system -
April 1795 - metric system finalised
September 1799 - compulsory in the area around Paris
September 1801 - compulsory throughout France
1812 - Napoleon rescinds metric system
1820 - metric system adopted in the Low Countries (Netherlands & Belgium)
1840 - metric system obligatory throughout France
But in everyday use, metric units did not replace customary units in France until after WW1, which brought almost everyone in France into contact with the government, which insisted on it. (Almost all industry became a supplier to the government and almost all adult men and many women served in either the armed forces or the government or a government supplier)

I think they only went to Kw's on cars to keep the numbers down for how much power the car has . there would be another supercar scare if you seen a FPV or HSV running around with 550HP on the side of the car . Still think there will be another supercar scare soon.
