I passed this information on to my brother in Houston - here is his response - worth noting that the situation is a lot worse than here.
"Car sales are down by much more here: overall it's about 36%. *Chrysler is the
worst of the major manufacturers, nearly 50% down, GM about 42% and Ford 31%. *
Toyota is down about 34%, Honda 32% and Nissan 42%. *Some of the minor
manufacturers are in even worse shape: I think Isuzu is down over 75%. *But
interestingly VW is only down 19%.
The general attitude in Houston towards bailing out the car manufacturers
is "so what if a million people in Detroit are out of work if GM goes belly
up -- no one bailed out the oil industry in the 1980s when a million people
were out of work.""
