Big slump in new car sales

    Hello to all,
I've just been reading in the Melbourne 'The Age' newspaper about the very big falls over the past few months in car sales. Toyota alone says it now has a stockpile of over 40,000 cars. Cars like the Chrysler 300c and Holden Statesman are down 63% to last years coresponding month. Landcruisers and the like down 50% and there are plenty of other examples. I'd say. that's great news for any potential new car buyers over the coming months from all makes. Bugga though I'm guessing to anyone trying to trade or sell a second hand car

Sure is. My missus (being an ex-Volvo driver) got an offer in the mail to buy a new Volvo and they would throw in:
    o Free rego
    o Free stamp duty
    o 3 years servicing
    o 3 years of petrol

They must be pretty desperate to quit stock.

Must be the same for Land Rover too I'd be guessing. Not so many people wanting to invest $50K - $150K in their products this year.

Given that there are long order times for cars (6 months +) I reckon by feb next year there are going to be some cracking prices. After the stock is used up they may go up due to the dollar.

It wouldn't be much fun being a dealer at the moment. Especially if your yard was GE or Essanda financed... which apparently 40% of them are.

There was also an article, but I can't find it online, saying Toyota were upping thier prices across the board from $500 on a yaris to something like $6500 on a landcruiser
Could be a desperate attempt to get heads in the door??

Wrong , Its the drop in the Austrailian $$
Look out cause you common Dunnydore will cost more , as more than 70% of the parts are imported to build your Austrailian car Did,nt know that did you

I passed this information on to my brother in Houston - here is his response - worth noting that the situation is a lot worse than here.

"Car sales are down by much more here: overall it's about 36%. *Chrysler is the
worst of the major manufacturers, nearly 50% down, GM about 42% and Ford 31%. *
Toyota is down about 34%, Honda 32% and Nissan 42%. *Some of the minor
manufacturers are in even worse shape: I think Isuzu is down over 75%. *But
interestingly VW is only down 19%.

The general attitude in Houston towards bailing out the car manufacturers
is "so what if a million people in Detroit are out of work if GM goes belly
up -- no one bailed out the oil industry in the 1980s when a million people
    were out of work.""

I chuckle when I see the current Holden ad on TV. They bang on about how times are tough, so they are doing deals on new Holdens.

I always think, if times are that tough for people, then don't buy a new car!

interesting isn't it?, the same importers didn't care to reduce prices when the dollar was increasing (and why should they have? - the customers were happy to pay )..........

.... but those importers/distributors surely were able to sock enough $s away then to see them through this little hiccup....

Yep the new defender 130 was pretty cheap compared to list price. But the sale of my Holden Crewman hurt just as much.

I think we havent seen the start of it yet. The Pickles Auction here during the week couldnt fit all the repossessd Mercs and other lux cars in the yard they were parked all the way down the street. Lots passed in too

A mate of mine just picked up a new Ford FPV GT about $20k off retail. Makes me wonder how much they were making before
