You want HOW much for that Land Cruiser?

I went to look at a Land Cruiser today. My cousin gave me the heads up, it belonged to a friend of his, no price, no full description, just the guy's contact details and that it was an FJ62 diesel. I checked on red book and the average price was $1,800 - 4,000, so I was expecting it'd be around the 3k mark. Basically a cheap 4x4 that I could flog, wreck, abuse and only need third party insurance at $12.50 per month.

Rocked up at 4, it turned out to be a 12H-T turbodiesel, no mods except a bullbar, little bit of rust, quite a few dents but that was neither here nor there. The interior was rough, it already had a RWC ready to go and a couple of months rego. When I jumped into the driver's seat to go for a test, my eyes couldn't believe the odometer - 535,000 km.

As you'd imagine it drove like a Land Cruiser with 535k, but I reckon it'd have had a bit of life left yet. I was going to arrange for my mechanic to have a look at it, then he spoke money, he asked $7,500.

    What a peanut.

In Red book, the FJ62 will be cheaper, it is a petrol. The HJ6* is the diesel, and a 12HT is the best motor of them all, in fact some say the 6* series factory turbo sahara etc was the last real l'cruiser. $7500 sounds reasonable for a GOOD example, with slightly lower K's and a few options.

Quite some time ago, I harboured a secret desire to own a HJ62 Turbo auto Sahara with all the factory options...

Then I remembered they still have drum brakes at the rear and cart springs

Edit, just had a peak at redbook site, what a farce. They list the Turbo engine as a 2HT, and the 2F engine code refers to a petrol engine! Redbook raises more questions than it answers IMHO.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Sorry, you're right, HJ62 and the red book adds 700 to that 4000. This was not a good example - it had a good powertrain, was roadworthy and the rest was rubbish. This one wasn't a Sahara, 5sp manual too.

I know what he was offered as a trade in - 5.8 times less than his asking price.

Spares are plentifull around here as most have rusted out.The electric window switches can be exy when they give up. They are a Tough old thing as far as diffs and chassis go. Why would you want the cart springs that come with 60 series after being around Rovers.

Yeah, I wouldn't have paid that much either
I was just mentioning that they are as far as I am concerned a better model than some of the later ones, if you get a rust free example and with moderate K's it'll see you a good few miles to come.

That 12HT is one of the better engines to come out of Japan, 4BD1's excluded

If its anything like a 1HD-T I'd be well happy. If I was game I'd just go a third-party option on the Disco, but she's wayyyyy too good/valuable to risk.

Ahh. Too much to think about my head hurts. Probably best to just walk.

A far better engine than a 1HD-T I reckon. They'll do 600K without batting an eyelid, and have stump pulling bottom end torque. They run very low boost, about 5.5psi so will go forever, and they do!
Not too bad in the economy stakes, but I think the 1HD-T has the edge there due to its more modern design.

Bugger the economy. The difference in insurance prices for the two vehicles will buy 2,767 litres of diesel per year.

Sounds like a good diesel though
