Yes it can be done, Disco_ute unpicked a 97 D1 dash and fitted it complete to his 93 RRC (not softdash) shell along with all the panels and inner guards. Big job and not for the faint hearted but if you are prepaired for the work and have the time go for it, they would be pretty cheap to pickup now.

Not so, I've seen a few done, both disco ugly dash and late dash

Same dimensions and actually a relatively easy fit

I know someone who fitted the whole dash from an update D1 into a late 80s classic. It's not a straight bolt in job but the body is physically the same size on the RR & D1. I thought it would look disgusting but it turned out quite OK.
I've seen pics of a Disco 1 with a classic RR front end and it looks remarkably good.

If you are going to rip out the dash, put in a new heater matrix. We all know the Discos/RRs were built around the heater, and its a pig of a job to replace.
    Just do it!

And just for something completely off beam, I changed the dash in a '73 transit van, all cedar and smiths gauges, and even a little cradle for the ancient bottle of wood oil......

stuff we do when we are young........
